Construction on Madison High School’s new building is nearly complete, with final preparations currently underway and an opening day set for January 2019.
Installation of carpet and vinyl flooring is wrapping up, and crews have begun installation of ceiling tile. The installation of the seating and wood flooring in the auditorium and gymnasium is also underway.
Furniture delivery began in late October and is scheduled to wrap up in December. Final City of Houston inspections are set to begin in early December.
Madison’s $94 million project, which is a part of the 2012 Bond program, spans 265,000 square feet and will accommodate up to 2,100 students. The new building features a two-story foyer that doubles as a dining commons and large gathering space and offers plenty of natural light.
“The students, faculty, and staff are very excited about the move into the new facility,” Principal Paolo Castagnoli said. “This will not only provide an updated, modern learning environment for our scholars, but will provide the facilities we need to develop our CTE and college prep programs to ensure that all of our student are college and career ready when they graduate from Madison.”
The school entrance is flanked by three, two-story academic wings to the east and performing arts and community spaces to the west. The gymnasium, athletics area, and swimming pool are located in the northeast portion of the building.
“We are very excited about the prospects this brings for both our students and the community we serve,” Castagnoli said.
Once the new school is finished, crews will begin demolition of the existing school to make way for new athletic fields.
Madison High School is among 40 schools, including 29 high schools, being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. More than 70 percent of all HISD construction projects are complete, and that number is expected to top 80 percent by the end of 2018. Once all projects are done, HISD will boast of one of the most modern portfolios of urban high schools in the country.
