Program a drone. Track movements of an Amazon delivery robot. Animate greeting cards. These are just a few of the ways students can participate in Computer Science Education Week on Dec. 7-13.
Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity in computer science education, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners in the field.
HISD’s Office of Career Readiness, along with DroneBlocks, Code Avengers, and Amazon Future Engineer-endorsed BootUp and CoderZ, have created computational thinking activities to inspire future computer science engineers.
Activities will include lessons such as designing a two-player game, creating iconic Pythonic Turtles, competing in the Amazon Cyber Robotics Challenge, and using a drone simulator to program a DJI drone. The lessons are available both online and unplugged and will engage students in experiential learning activities throughout the week.
More than 100 million students worldwide have already participated in an Hour of Code, and HISD is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills to prepare students to compete in tomorrow’s economy.
In addition, the Office of Career Readiness will have daily messages from special guests to help promote Computer Science Education Week. Students will be challenged to think critically and solve problems as they learn the basics of computer programming.
Share pictures of your campus coding activities or coding event and a selfie with your certificate on social media using #CSinHISD, #CSforAll, #CSforGood, and #CSforSocialJustice.
