HISD Board of Education Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones and various administrators addressed dozens of parents at a public meeting at Kashmere High School Tuesday on the proposed changes to school attendance zones to prepare for the North Forest transition. The school zone changes would impact Kashmere High School as well as Key Middle School and Cook, Kashmere Gardens, McGowen and Paige elementary schools.

Incentive offered for employees who transfer to campuses in North Forest community
To support the recruitment and staffing of the annexed North Forest ISD schools with the best employees available, an open transfer period is being made available to current HISD teachers, administrators, and other exempt employees who are interested in seeking a 2013–2014 school year position with one of the campuses located in the North Forest community.

Principals selected, changes proposed for North Forest schools
As the State of Texas moves forward with its order to close North Forest ISD and annex the area into the Houston Independent School District, HISD is making plans to change the purpose of some NFISD buildings and selecting staff for NFISD schools.
In addition, the district plans to recommend attendance zones for the North Forest area to meet the needs of transferred students, and make modest changes to HISD school attendance zones for areas adjoining the North Forest boundary later this summer. Pursuant to the order issued by Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams, these changes will take effect on July 1, 2013.

HISD opens satellite office for North Forest parents, staff
The Houston Independent School District has opened a satellite office for North Forest parents and staff to get more information about the upcoming annexation set for July 1, 2013.
The office, located at the Northeast Multi-Service Center, 9720 Spaulding, will be open Mondays through Thursdays from June 3 through June 27, 2013. Staff members from the Office of School Support (Federal & State Compliance, Parent & Community Assistance, and School Choice), Academic Services (Special Education, Multilingual, Athletics, and Counseling) and Human Resources will be on-hand to address questions and concerns. The services offered change each day, so be sure to check the schedule before you visit the office.

North Forest Tele-Town Hall Event draws hundreds – Updated with audio
On Wednesday night, Houston ISD hosted its first ever Tele-Town Hall event to discuss the upcoming annexation of North Forest ISD to HISD. More than 800 people had the opportunity to speak, in English or Spanish, with HISD administrators about such topics as school closings, magnet enrollment, dress codes and special education services for incoming North Forest students.
“We had a lot of interesting questions and a lot of people wanting information so I think it went very well”, said panelist and HISD Board District II trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones.
Tele-Town Hall Meetings Tonight for North Forest Parents
In an effort to ensure a smooth transition for parents and students as the North Forest community joins the Houston Independent School District on July 1, HISD is hosting two tele-town hall meetings on Wednesday, May 28, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The meetings will give parents the opportunity to ask questions directly to Superintendent Terry Grier and other HISD administrators.
North Forest parents can participate in the tele-town hall meetings by calling a toll-free number. To participate in the English tele-town hall, parents can call toll-free 855-246-7045, extension 21856#. Spanish-speaking parents may call 855-246-7045, extension 21911# to participate in the Spanish town hall. HISD will also be calling all North Forest students’ households directly when the tele-town hall meetings begins at 6:30 p.m.
In addition, HISD is hosting a school choice fair for North Forest students in grades 6-12 on Thursday, May 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Northeast Multi-Service Center, 9720 Spaulding. Students and parents can get more information on the variety of options available to them at HISD including magnet, charter, multilingual, International Baccalaureate, Vanguard, early college, college prep schools and career academies.

HISD holds school choice fairs for North Forest students
The Houston Independent School District is holding two school choice fairs for North Forest students and their parents.
Earlier this year, the Texas Education Agency ordered North Forest ISD to be closed and annexed by HISD effective July 1. North Forest has approximately 7,000 students, and those students will become HISD students.
