Alesander Olaizola has been selected as the new principal of Tijerina Elementary School. Olaizola began his career in HISD in 2005 as a fifth-grade teacher at Burnet Elementary School, where he also served as a Campus Educational Technologist and Instructional Specialist. In 2014, he joined the leadership of Scarborough Elementary School as an Assistant Principal. Olaizola earned his bachelor’s degree in Geography and History and master’s degree in Art History from the Universidad de Oviedo, Spain. He earned his Master in Business Educational Administration (MBEA) from University of St. Thomas.

LaTreia Woodard named new principal of Foerster Elementary School
Dr. LaTreia Woodard is the principal of Foerster Elementary School. Dr. Woodard began her career in education in the 2003-2004 school year as an intervention teacher in Cypress Fairbanks ISD. Woodard has taught a variety of grade levels from Kindergarten through seventh grade in Fort Bend ISD and Houston ISD. She continued to develop her leadership skills through service as a Team Leader, Data Specialist, Instructional Specialist, and Dean of Instruction before becoming an IAT Manager in the Interventions office. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, Master of Education Degree from Concordia University Texas, and her doctorate degree from Texas Southern University.
HISD appoints 3 new area superintendents for 2018-2019 school year
The Houston Independent School District is announcing new area superintendents for the 2018-2019 school year to lead three areas of the district.
In HISD, area superintendents lead key areas covering all schools in the district, which are being modified from seven to six areas for 2018-2019: Achieve 180 Schools, and the North, Northwest, South, East, and West areas of the district.
“These area superintendents bring with them a wealth of experience and numerous recognitions for their leadership in HISD at the campus and district levels,” said HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan. “I am confident that under their leadership, we will keep pushing to ensure every child is supported in their journey to a quality education.” Continue reading
Christina Lovette named new principal of Whidby Elementary School
Christina Lovette has been selected as the new principal of Whidby Elementary School. Lovette began her teaching career in Louisiana in 1994 and joined HISD in 1996 as a history teacher at Henry Middle School. She served as assistant principal and principal in both Alvin and Houston ISDs, as well as director of curriculum and instruction in Alvin. Lovette earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from Dillard University, and her Master of Science in Educational Administration and her Doctorate of Education in Professional Leadership from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
Meagan Edwards named new principal of Grissom Elementary School
Meagan Edwards has been selected as the new principal of Grissom Elementary School. Edwards began her career in education in 2002 as a third-grade teacher at HISD’s Cornelius Elementary School. Edwards also served as a third- and fifth-grade teacher at Young Elementary School and Davila Elementary School before entering into leadership as a teacher specialist. She continued to develop her leadership skills through service as a teacher specialist at Hobby Elementary School before becoming the assistant principal at Woodson PK-8, one of the Superintendent’s Schools under the Achieve 180 program. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Educational Administration from University of Houston.
Roshanda Griffin named new principal of Williams Middle School
Roshanda Griffin has been named as the new principal of Williams Middle School. Griffin began her teaching career in HISD in 1996 as an elementary teacher at Jones Elementary School. She served in Aldine ISD as a math instructional specialist before returning to HISD as an assistant principal at Whidby Elementary School and Woodson K-8. In 2011, she was named principal at Whidby. Under her leadership, the campus has seen a significant increase in enrollment and has maintained a Met Standard rating with distinctions. Griffin received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston-Downtown and a master’s degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University.
Keri Wittpenn named new principal of Jane Long Academy
Keri Wittpenn has been selected as the new principal of Jane Long Academy. Wittpen began her career in HISD teaching at Westside High School as a Spanish, Social Studies, and ESL teacher. At Long Academy, Wittpenn served in various roles over the past seven years, including instructional specialist, middle school grade level dean, magnet coordinator, and assistant principal. Most recently at Long Academy, Wittpenn led in the development of the Futures Academy Pharmacy Technician High School Program, expanding Long to grades six through twelve. Wittpenn earned her Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University in Political Science and Spanish, and her Master of Business Administration from Rice University with an emphasis in the Entrepreneurship Program (REEP).
Sabrina Cuby-King named new principal of Sterling High School
Sabrina Cuby-King has been selected as the new principal of Sterling High School. Ms. Cuby-King has over 20 years of experience in education as a teacher, curriculum writer, instructional specialist, dean of students and middle school principal. Under her leadership as principal of Fleming Middle School, the campus has Met Standard each year, with distinctions. Fleming also earned Top Tier Comparative Growth in Math and Science. Her strength is developing both student and teacher leaders. She has worked closely with Wheatley High School administrators and teachers to create a strong middle-to-high-school transition. This school year, she was named North Area Secondary Principal of the Year. Cuby-King earned her bachelor’s degree from Spelman College and Master of Education and Master of Arts in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University.
Andre’ Walker named HISD Director of Athletics
Andre’ Walker has been selected as the Director of Athletics. Walker has spent the past 18 years serving students in HISD as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and most recently as a senior athletics program administrator for the district’s Athletics Department.
He is a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, National Federation of State High School Association, Texas High School Coaches, Texas Girls Coaches Association, and the Houston Coaches Association. In addition, he serves on the Official’s Advisory Committee for the Texas High School Athletic Director Association.
Walker received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Texas Southern University, Master’s in Education from Prairie View A&M University, and is currently completing his doctoral degree in Education Administration.
LaJuana Armstrong-Jean named new principal of Isaacs Elementary School
LaJuana Armstrong-Jean has been selected as the new principal of Isaacs Elementary School. Armstrong-Jean joined Team HISD in 1996 as an associate teacher and later began teaching full time at Garden Villas Elementary School. Armstrong-Jean went on to serve as an instructional coordinator and assistant principal, most recently at Key Middle School. Armstrong-Jean received a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Southwest Texas State University and a master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
