Booker T. Washington High School is receiving $51.7 million for a new campus accommodating 1,100 to 1,300 students interested in the engineering professions.

The demolition and relocation of existing utilities and power poles for the campus are underway, along with ongoing site work. During the spring of 2015, a geological fault line was discovered running diagonally across the new campus site, causing the campus to undergo a redesign. The project is back on track and will showcase the school’s engineering program with 21st century technology and flexible learning spaces to support project-based learning and encourage collaboration.

The target completion date is set for third quarter of 2017.

Eastwood Academy will receive a new facility that incorporates the new two-story classroom wing to accommodate 500 students.

Site plans for the school include a new student dining and multipurpose area, a career and technical education center, library, an athletics facility, and a SPARK park open to students and the neighborhood. The addition will be built on a field neighboring the school and will connect to the school’s existing building.

The project will be split into two phases, beginning with construction of the south building, followed by the north building addition to be completed at the end of 2017. Students will continue to attend the existing school during construction.

[photoshelter-gallery g_id=”G0000GAgCthXM4Jk” g_name=”2015-Bond-Askew” width=”600″ f_fullscreen=”t” bgtrans=”t” pho_credit=”iptc” twoup=”f” f_bbar=”t” f_bbarbig=”f” fsvis=”f” f_show_caption=”t” crop=”f” f_enable_embed_btn=”t” f_htmllinks=”t” f_l=”t” f_send_to_friend_btn=”f” f_show_slidenum=”t” f_topbar=”f” f_show_watermark=”t” img_title=”casc” linkdest=”c” trans=”xfade” target=”_self” tbs=”5000″ f_link=”t” f_smooth=”f” f_mtrx=”t” f_ap=”t” f_up=”f” height=”400″ btype=”old” bcolor=”#CCCCCC” ]

Askew is receiving a new school to accommodate 850 students, with a budget of $26.6 million. Based on stakeholder feedback from the first community meeting held in July, the project team spent time this fall making design modifications.

The design features a two-story building erected on the north side of the property, with the front entrance remaining south-facing on Wood Lodge. The building plans provide for ample natural light, flexible learning spaces, and areas to accommodate outdoor learning opportunities. Many of the trees will be preserved, and the playground will feature a walking/jogging path that will be available for community use.

The second community meeting will be scheduled in the first quarter 2016. Construction is expected to start in the third quarter 2016, and take about 18 months to complete.

Stakeholders of Furr High School gathered on Oct. 29 to break ground on the school’s new $55 million campus.

The new 182,000-square-foot, three-story building is designed to enhance Furr’s science, technology, engineering, and arts programs and will include flexible, brightly colored learning areas that can be adjusted through moveable furniture and sliding glass doors. Students will remain in the existing facility while the new building is erected on the adjacent athletics fields. Once the new building is complete, the current building will be demolished and new athletics fields will be built on that site.

The new campus will accommodate up to 1,300 students and is expected to be substantially complete in the first quarter of 2017.

Garden Oaks will receive a new $26.6 million addition and general renovations of the existing facilities designed to accommodate 750 to 900 students in pre-K through eighth grade.

Design plans feature both new and renovated classroom spaces, a new multipurpose gymnasium, and a new secure main entrance. Additional parking and separate bus and parent drop-off driveways, as well as upgraded electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems are also included in the scope of work. The school will feature flexible, child-centered learning spaces that will accommodate diverse learning styles with integrated technology.

The project team plans to retain most of the green space and trees that are important to the school and incorporate outdoor learning centers.

The school is in the design phase, which will continue in 2016. Construction is expected to begin later this year and take about 18 months to complete.

New Sharpstown International ahead of schedule

[photoshelter-gallery g_id=”G0000pwjxzOV.kYo” g_name=”2015-Bond-SIS” width=”600″ f_fullscreen=”t” bgtrans=”t” pho_credit=”iptc” twoup=”f” f_bbar=”t” f_bbarbig=”f” fsvis=”f” f_show_caption=”t” crop=”f” f_enable_embed_btn=”t” f_htmllinks=”t” f_l=”t” f_send_to_friend_btn=”f” f_show_slidenum=”t” f_topbar=”f” f_show_watermark=”t” img_title=”casc” linkdest=”c” trans=”xfade” target=”_self” tbs=”5000″ f_link=”t” f_smooth=”f” f_mtrx=”t” f_ap=”t” f_up=”f” height=”400″ btype=”old” bcolor=”#CCCCCC” ]

Sharpstown International is slated to receive renovations to its existing facilities and site improvements with a total program budget of $6.1 million. The project is comprised of three portions: updating and securing the main entrance, renovating the large breezeways to provide more flexible learning spaces, and building additional learning centers or flex lab spaces.

The main entrance will be retrofitted with a security vestibule that will provide controlled access and also give the building an updated modern feel. A pod of flexible learning spaces will be constructed in the heart of the campus, which is currently an internal courtyard. The main existing corridors, which are covered and partially open to the elements, will be updated, enclosed and air conditioned to make the space more inviting and usable for a variety of student and community activities.

The project is well ahead of schedule and is expected to begin construction in the first half of 2016, and take about 18 months to complete.

The school is being built adjacent to the existing building while students continue to attend classes. The new $24.3 million facility for 750 students will feature a centralized learning commons area surrounded by a two-story cluster of classrooms, an open-concept design with plenty of natural light and flexible work spaces.

The school has a target opening of August 2016.

The construction work at Milby High School took a major step forward on Thursday when workers lifted the first wall of the new school.

“It’s really a ballet,” said HISD’s Project Manager Mark Crippen. “Once the first wall is up, it just keeps going. That crane can’t stop.”

Milby is among 40 HISD schools being renovated or rebuilt as part of the district’s $1.89 billion bond program. The 267,000 square foot project is a combination of new construction and renovation. The school will maintain its historical façade along Broadway in Houston’s East End, while creating a modern learning environment for up to 2,000 students.
