African American Advisory Committee Gets Update on 2012 Bond Program

HISD’s African American Advisory Committee heard firsthand Tuesday the latest updates on the 2012 bond program, which includes an ongoing pledge to keep Houston’s minority community informed on opportunities to do business with the district.

Reagan K-8 Center to dedicate new school on Wednesday

reaganBilly Reagan Educational K-8 Center, one of HISD’s newest campuses, will host its school dedication, Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for students, parents, and community members.

The school’s namesake, Dr. Billy Reagan, was HISD’s superintendent from 1974 to 1986. During Reagan’s 12 years with the district, he created the magnet school system and launched the district’s first International Baccalaureate program. For more than 50 years, he has been dedicated to improving the quality of education for all students in Texas. Continue reading

Want to do business with HISD? Register for ‘Workshop Wednesday’

The Houston Independent School District’s Business Assistance department is hosting the first of a two-part workshop series for potential contractors interested in bidding on upcoming projects with the district on Wednesday, Jan. 9,  from 3-5 p.m. at HISD’s CFS Operations (formerly Brock Elementary School) at 1417 Houston Ave.

Participants will learn about submitting proposals, get more information on RFPs and RFQs, and hear more about the proposal evaluation process for the district’s $1.89 billion bond program, which will fund the replacement or repair of 40 schools.

 “These workshops are to ensure that all bidders have a good understanding of the RFP process and the district’s expectations,” said Alexis Licata, HISD’s general manager of Business Assistance.

The second portion of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6, also from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Office of Business Assistance hosts workshops the first Wednesday of every month.

Board President Television Show Takes an Up Close Look at Next Steps in 2012 Bond Program

Who: The January 2013 edition of HISD Up Close hosted by HISD Board President Michael Lunceford discusses the next steps in the 2012 HISD Bond Program, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in November. The program also takes a closer look at Istation, an online tool that elementary school teachers across the district are using for literacy assessment and intervention. Fellow Board Trustee Paula Harris also stops by with three principals to talk about some of the exciting things happening at schools in the neighborhoods she represents.

Deadline extended for HISD’s RFQ on architectural, engineering services

Architectural and engineering firms seeking to take part in the Houston Independent School District’s $1.89 billion 2012 bond program to replace and modernize schools across the city will have more time to submit their Statement of Qualifications.

HISD officials decided to push back the deadline from Jan. 7 to Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. after more than 300 people turned out Tuesday for a pre-submittal conference on the RFQ to solicit design and engineering services to build or renovate 40 schools.

Attendees asked a variety of questions about the RFQ, including how to present financial information and how to comply with district goals on participation by minority and women-owned business enterprises. In addition, many asked for more time to prepare their submissions. Continue reading

HISD facility planners visit bond campuses, meet with principals

Now that the Houston Independent School District has laid out the construction timeline for the 40 schools slated to be rebuilt or renovated under the 2012 bond program, planners are busy visiting principals and campuses to learn about each school’s unique needs and goals.  

The goal is to get a better understanding of the specific attributes of every campus, from their educational programs and student population to their site needs, traffic flow and any other issues raised by the principal. Continue reading

Hundreds turn out to imagine the future of learning in HISD

Savian Nugent will likely have graduated college and be starting his career by the time Yates High School is replaced with a new $59.4 million building under the Houston Independent School District’s 2012 bond program.

But the current Yates senior sees a lot of benefits for the students who will have the opportunity to attend a modern urban high school with all the latest technology and innovations, including reducing drop-out rates and improving academic achievement.

“It will give them something to believe in,” he said. “If you give them something to hope for, they will come.”

Nugent, along with four other high school students were panelists Friday at HISD’s “Building the Future” workshop. The half-day event, held at Kingdom Builders Center, gave more than 200 school officials, parents and community members the opportunity to share their thoughts on creating innovative educational environments, as the district kicks off its bond program to repair, build or replace 40 schools across the city.  The Houston Independent School District on Friday will host “Building the Future,” a half-day workshop on designing 21st-century schools, as the district kicks off its bond program to repair, build or replace 40 schools across the city

 “School officials, parents and community members will have a chance to share their thoughts on how to create innovative educational environments,” said Sue Robertson, general manager, facilities planning for HISD.

Video Series Gives Another Look at 2012 Bond Projects

The Houston Independent School District is launching a new series of videos to help explain different aspects of the 2012 bond program that will renovate, replace or rebuild 40 schools across the city.

The short videos, designed for both web and TV, cover topics such as procurement and insurance on bond projects, as well as the benefits of building schools that are environmentally sustainable. The goal is to give viewers a quick snapshot into how the district is moving forward with its $1.89 billion building plan. Continue reading

HISD hosts info sessions on doing business with district

More than two dozen people turned out to Milby High School Wednesday to learn about doing business with the Houston Independent School District, with a special emphasis on how to avoid costly errors.

Those in attendance Wednesday afternoon included architects, engineers, other professional service providers and construction contractors.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to learn how to do business with HISD and to learn more about our 2012 bond program,” said Alexis Licata, general manager of Business Assistance. “We want to ensure that all vendors understand the procurement process and the bidding opportunities.”
