Successful ‘Students Within Reach’ walk encourages students to return to school
Kashmere High School sophomore Floyd Young dreams of becoming a professional football player one day, but before he can play in the NFL, he knows he must return to school. Young had not been in a classroom due to the threat of COVID-19, but his mindset changed on Saturday when HISD Superintendent Millard House personally came to his home to check on him.
Along with staff, administrators, and community members, House walked door-to-door as part of the “Students Within Reach Walk” effort to reconnect with students who had not returned to school this fall.
Lanier MS math teacher wins coveted Kinder Award
Rodrigus Graham, a sixth-grade math teacher at Lanier Middle School, was named the 2021 Kinder Award winner on Thursday, which included a cash prize of $25,000.
Graham received the award during a surprise ceremony in the school’s library. He was nominated by Assistant Principal Marcus Williams and originally thought he was heading a professional development session before being surprised with the award. WWE Hall of Famer and Houston native Booker T surprised Graham with a pre-recorded video announcing the Kinder Award honor.
Waltrip HS Ram Band says thanks for experience of a lifetime in D.C.
Many Waltrip Ram Band students are calling it the experience of a lifetime. Those are just a few of the words being used to describe the band’s trip to the recent Inaugural Celebration in Washington, D.C. The Ram Band was selected to represent Houston ISD and the state of Texas during ceremonies celebrating President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Continue reading
