More than 2,000 Houston ISD students from more than 120 schools participated last week in the second annual field days hosted by the district and Special Olympics Texas.
The events were for students who have intellectual disabilities.
“It’s so important because it gives our children the opportunity to participate just as regular athletes do,” teacher Lynn Mayer said.
Students competed in the following events:
• track (100-meter dash or 25-meter dash for students in wheelchairs)
• softball/ball throw
• flag football drill
• soccer kicking drill
• basketball drill
• tennis drill
More than 300 volunteers made sure the games ran smoothly. HISD and Special Olympics Texas staff members, along with community members, parents, and classmates, filled the stands to cheer on the students.
Take a look at photos from the field days:

This was a truly amazing and heart-warming event. In addition to the smiles on the faces of all of the students, I was touched by the care and dedication of all of the parents, teachers, staff, and volunteers. I can’t wait until next year!
