HISD middle schoolers explore different careers in aviation through United partnership

Sterling Aviation Early College High School opened its on-campus hangar to welcome students from nine HISD middle schools for the Discover United Airlines Expo and career fair.

The full-day event was an opportunity for students to learn more about the aviation-focused high school and the different aviation careers.

Throughout the day, students rotated through six activity stations where United employees led panel discussions and held interactive sessions. Among the experts were pilots, tech operators, maintenance technicians, airport operators, and in-flight attendants—giving students a chance to explore a wide range of airline careers.

Participating campuses:

  • Attucks Middle School
  • Billy Regan K-8 Educational Center
  • Burbank Middle School
  • Fleming Middle School
  • Fonville Middle School
  • Jane Long Academy
  • Mandarin Immersion Magnet School
  • Ortiz Middle School
  • Thomas Middle School

Last year, HISD and United Airlines announced a multi-year mentoring and career development program for aspiring aviators that included a financial commitment of $300,000 through HISD Foundation towards Sterling Aviation Early College High School’s aviation program. The mentorship program launched in the spring with 50 students, each partnered with a Houston-based United employee. The goal is to have all participants pursue a career in aviation after graduation.

For students interested in attending Sterling Aviation Early College High School, School Choice applications for the 2023-2024 school year will open in December.
