A record number 112 HISD seniors received full-ride scholarships at the annual Marvy Finger Family Foundation Scholarship Ceremony held Wednesday, April 26, at Delmar Fieldhouse.

Since 2013, the Marvy Finger Family Foundation has awarded HISD graduates full scholarships to promote career and technical education (CTE) opportunities for students living in communities of socioeconomic disadvantage.

The scholarship recipients, who will attend two-year colleges to pursue CTE certificates and associate degrees, are students seeking careers in fast-growing and rewarding fields such as computer programing, petroleum engineering technology, automotive, pipefitting, cybersecurity, construction, welding, nursing and more.

“I want to thank the Marvy Finger Family for seeing a major need in this community to help connect deserving students who might not have had the means to move on and pursue higher education,” said Superintendent Millard House II. “Your generosity is quite frankly unlimited and will make a major difference in the families and lives of our students for many years to come.”

In addition to tuition, the scholarship will also cover books, public transportation, supplies and, thanks to a partnership with the Houston Food Bank, the Marvy Finger Family Foundation will provide students meals twice a month while they are in college.

“Mr. Finger was a product of HISD,” said Marvy Finger Family Foundation Executive Director Keisha Smith-Davis. “Today provides us the opportunity to remember him and support these students in their post-secondary education.”

With more than 600 applications, the Marvy Finger Family Foundation selected recipients based on their interest in a career and technical program, grade point average, extracurricular involvement, and financial need.
