Woman-owned horticultural business provides safe green spaces for HISD schools

mwbe_snapshot1_rev1Editor’s note: This profile is part of an occasional series on minority- or women-owned companies that do business with HISD. The district’s minimum M/WBE goal levels are 20 percent for all levels of purchasing and construction and 25 percent for professional services. In the 2007 bond program, that commitment reached nearly 34 percent. In the 2012 program, the contracts awarded to date reflect a nearly 51 percent M/WBE commitment.

Eastwood Academy design develops with collegiate model in mind

Eastwood Academy students want their new building to feel more like a college campus with learning commons where students can study independently and lounge with friends.

“Many school buildings look plain and boring,” said Eastwood student Rosemary Lugo. “I would like to see them bridge our building together almost like a mini-college with learning commons for students to hang out or read books by themselves.”

Video showcases progress on design for new Relief Elementary

HISD released a new video that shows staff, parents, and architects working together to plan the design of a new elementary school in the west Houston area that will be built to relieve crowding.

The school, known as Relief Elementary until it gets an official name, will be located on a 10-acre site on Old Farm Road near the Buffalo Bayou, less than a few blocks north of Westheimer Road between Hillcroft Street and Fondren Road. The school will be immersed in nature on a woody site that offers views of the bayou and allows learning areas such as science and art rooms to easily open to the outdoors.

21st century dining options for 21st century schools

HISD is looking to serve up more than hot lunches on flat trays as it takes school dining into the future.

Imagine schools with cafeterias that look like food courts or airport dining kiosks with a variety of tasty and healthy menu options. That’s the goal as the district moves forward with its 2012 bond program, which will offer the opportunity to rebuild and renovate eating spaces at 40 schools across Houston.
