Farias ECC Recognized as a Model for Behavior Management

For the second time in three years, HISD’s Farias Early Childhood Center has been singled out by a nationally known child-development expert for its success in implementing a particular behavior management program.

Dr. Becky Bailey, author of Conscious Discipline, came to the campus on March 22 to recognize Farias for being a model of the behavior modification program of the same name she developed. More than 150 educators from across North America (including a few from as far away as Mexico) also came to visit, to see the strategies described in the book in action.

HISD Repeats as Broad Prize Finalist

Houston among nation’s top four urban districts for second straight year 

For the second consecutive year, HISD has emerged from the pack of the nation’s 75 largest school districts to be named a finalist for the most coveted honor a public school system can win: The Broad Prize for Urban Education.

Houston ISD high school seniors are now guaranteed at least $150,000 and as much as $550,000 in college scholarships if the district wins the top prize.  The award is given to the one urban school district in America that has consistently demonstrated the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among poor and minority students.  Finalists were determined based upon a wide-ranging review of student achievement data from the 2008-2009 school year through the 2011-2012 school year in an effort to reward consistency.

Two HISD Schools Recognized as National Magnet Schools of Merit

Two Houston ISD schools have received the National Magnet School of Merit’s Magnet Schools of Distinction award from the Magnet Schools of America.

Berry Elementary and Garden Oaks Montessori received the MSA’s Magnet School of Distinction award for 2013. The two HISD schools were among seven Texas schools to receive recognition.

HISD Receives Financial Reporting Award

For at least the previous 25 years, the Houston Independent School District has been recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award. On Thursday, the district once again received the ASBO honor.

The award, given to school districts that demonstrate superior accounting practices and reporting procedures, was presented to the district for its 2011-2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (PDF), which was presented for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

The award certifies the district has continually conformed to the principles and standards of financial reporting as recommended by the ASBO.

 

HISD Superintendent Terry B. Grier to be Honored by the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators

The Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE) will award HISD Superintendent Terry Grier its Presidential Award during the organization’s 26th Annual Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony. The Presidential Award is presented to educators who are pioneers in the education of Houston’s youth.   The HAABSE will also honor community activist Georgia Provost for her work in education, and will recognize exceptional teachers from greater Houston and surrounding areas.  Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors studying education.  The HAABSE’s primary mission is to enhance leadership in providing valuable professional services and strategies to institutions, agencies, and communities engaged in creating an environment in which students, particularly minority students, can achieve academic excellence.

Educators from three HISD campuses have been named finalists in the 2013 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program, spotlighting them as some of the best educators in Texas.

HSPVA Alumnus Robert Glasper Wins Grammy Award

Robert Glasper, an alumnus of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, took home the award for Best R&B Album earlier this month at the 55th Grammy Awards.

Glasper, who turns 35 in April, won for his latest album, “Black Radio.” The album blends jazz, R&B, funk and hip-hop and features appearances by Lupe Fiasco, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and others.

Waltrip Ram Band Prepares for Inaugural Celebration Performances

Donations from local attorney and Texas legislator helped group finally meet its fundraising goal

The Waltrip Ram Band is making final preparations for its trip to perform at the Inaugural Celebration in Washington, D.C.  For the past few months, the band has been holding benefit concerts and other events to raise the $150,000 needed to cover the costs of the trip for the more than 140 students.
