Batter up! Key MS breaks ground on new, state-of-the-art baseball field

SELF and Fondren foundations bring baseball, unity to school community

When baseball season begins next spring, the students at Francis Scott Key Middle School will be running the bases of their new baseball field. The Stacey and Bo Porter SELF Foundation, in partnership with the Fondren Foundation, are together donating the construction and support for the field.

“Part of our mission is facility improvements, and this is a step in that direction,” said Bo Porter, chairman of SELF — which stands for Sports, Education, Lifeskills, and Faith.

ALERT: Some sports canceled due to weather

Due to strong storms throughout the Houston region, the Houston ISD athletics department has canceled all seventh-grade football and seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball games scheduled for Mon., Oct, 13, 2014.

Schools may elect to cancel afterschool activities, including athletic practices. Please contact your school directly to determine if planned activities will go on as scheduled.

We’ve got a packed weekend of high school football!

One of the most closely watched matchups will be Bellaire vs. Lamar. Lamar has won the last 31 games against Bellaire and is looking to extend its streak to 32, but the powerful Cardinals are looking put a stop to it. Yates boys’ basketball teams receive title trophies

Yates High School received the 2013 and 2014 Conference 3A Boys Basketball State Championship trophies on Tuesday. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) awarded the titles to Yates after they were forfeited by Dallas Independent School District’s Madison High School in August.

Request a new sport at your school

When you read this year’s HISD Code of Conduct, you’ll see something interesting on the last page – a form to request a new sport on your campus.

According to the district’s athletics department, students and parents have always been able to ask for a sport, and requests for both UIL- and non-UIL sanctioned sports have been requested. Some of those requests have resulted in schools getting a new team, including lacrosse at Lamar High School and volleyball at Carnegie Vanguard High School. Continue reading
