Construction at the new High School for the Performing & Visual Arts got an enthusiastic start on Sunday with a groundbreaking ceremony that drew hundreds of people to the school’s new location downtown.

Packed house at PowerUp training with Mooresville, N.C., educators

Nearly 150 teachers from across the district packed Carnegie High School on a recent Saturday to attend a half-day training with educators from the Mooresville Graded School District in Mooresville, North Carolina. HISD has partnered with Mooresville to help train and offer professional development to HISD high school teachers involved in PowerUp, the district’s digital transformation effort that includes distributing laptops to every high school student. ’Tis the season to be reading

It was a night filled with good cheer during literacy night at Anderson Elementary Dual Language School, when dozens of students and their parents showed up to celebrate literacy and the holidays. Reading, games, and art projects kept students entertained, as various prizes were awarded and refreshments were served.

HISD school named finalist for national urban education award

Sanchez Elementary School is among 22 schools from across the country–and the only one from HISD–selected as a finalist for the National Excellence in Urban Education Award. The school was recognized by the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) for generating strong test results, high attendance rates, and excellent student behavior among all student demographics. Worthing High School stakeholders gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the construction of the school’s new 21st century addition and had the opportunity to sign a steel beam that will be used in the building.

The school is the first within the 2012 bond program to go vertical, with the steel framework already well underway.

Reading aloud to students is widely recognized as the single most important activity for developing literacy. And if that reader also can serve as a positive male role model, even better.

This past fall, Anderson Elementary Dual Language School launched M.A.L.E. (Men and Literacy Evolving), an initiative in which male members of the community come to the school to read to students on the last Monday of each month. Anderson Principal Roslyn Stiles Vaughn envisioned the program after a member of her church expressed his desire to make a difference by reading to students. Continue reading

It was the trip of the year for Woodson Leadership Academy sixth-graders. Nearly 100 youngsters traveled to Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) to explore the world of marine and maritime studies.

The students split into small groups, and Texas A&M students took them on walking tours of the campus located on Pelican Island, followed by a hands-on lesson about oysters from Wetlands Center and Field Trip Coordinator William Daily. Daily jumped into the water at the Dr. Sammy and Charlotte Ray Oyster Garden and started fishing around for oysters to show eager students, who passed around them around, marveling at tiny creatures attached to the rough shells. Foerster Elementary School students were treated to a visit from the Houston Police Department’s K-9 Unit on Thursday, Dec. 4 while learning the importance of making positive decisions every day.
