New Jersey student inspired to reach out to HISD in wake of Harvey 

Like millions of others across the country, Aleyna Kilic, a seventh-grade student in Jersey City, NJ, watched the news about Hurricane Harvey in disbelief at the devastation the storm wrought.

Instead of thinking, “someone has to do something,” Kilic knew she had to get involved personally.

Unsure about the best course of action, she reached out to the counselor at her school, The Learning Community Charter School, Shanelle Muse. LCCS is a PK-8 school with 585 students who come from all over Jersey City, which has been named one of the most diverse cities in the nation.   Continue reading

Number of Family Friendly Schools more than doubles in second year of program

Sixty-one HISD schools took the Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) Department’s challenge to get their campus certified as a Family Friendly School for the 2016-2017 school year, and they did it.

Campuses worked diligently during this past school year to offer their families and communities research-based activities and strategies to expand and build relationships, link events to student learning, and build capacity and support efforts for family and community empowerment.  Through these efforts, schools attained one of the three Family Friendly School Certification levels:   Continue reading

Listen & Learn meeting at Northside HS postponed

Update: A new date for the Listen & Learn meeting outlined below will be announced at a later date.

HISD Board of Education Trustee Anna Eastman will host a community town hall meeting for the north region schools with Superintendent Richard Carranza at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Northside High School.

The meeting, part of the continuing “Listen & Learn Tour” will be a way to solicit input from stakeholders about the district’s future and learn about key issues across HISD.

Parent Engagement Representatives enhance parent and guardian outreach efforts

One key component to achieve this goal is by empowering parents to become advocates in their children’s education, and to do so, FACE is helping schools build their capacity to reach parents through its FACE Parent Engagement Representatives (PERs) program.

HISD’s Family and Community Engagement Department hosted its Fall Festival for the community on Oct. 29 with a special focus on early childhood, bringing together all parents enrolled in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngster (HIPPY) program.

More than 400 people attended the Fall Festival and enjoyed free games, arts and crafts, food, and educational resources. Parents also had access to numerous free resources offered by community partners and organizations to help guide families in various areas.

Family fun awaits at HIPPY Fall Festival 

HISD’s Family and Community Engagement Department invites you to join the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters program this Saturday, Oct. 29 for a fun family affair during its Fall Festival.

Attendees will be able to enjoy games, arts and crafts, snacks, prizes, music, educational resources, and are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costume.

Parents will also have access to a wealth of information from various community partners, including access to signing up for Ready Rosie, HISD’s newest partnership offering a free resource for parents of children 0-6 years old. Additional community resources, from early childhood information to other social services organization, will be available.

Location: Parking lot of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church (2201 Tuam Ave., 77004)

Date: Saturday, Oct. 29

Time: 8 a.m. – noon.

Everyone is welcome, so come out and bring your family and friends.

52 schools take on Family Friendly Schools Challenge

The Family and Community Engagement Department (FACE) is welcoming 52 HISD campuses into its Family Friendly Schools Program for the 2016-2017 school year – twice the number of campuses from the previous school year.

2015-2016 HIPPY participants gather for graduation ceremonies

HISD’s Family and Community Engagement department on Tuesday hosted an end-of-year ceremony at Chavez High School to honor 2015-2016 HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) graduates.

More than 500 parents and children completed the program this year. FACE held two additional end-of-year gatherings at Fondren Middle School on May 16 and Sam Houston MSTC on May 18. Together, those gatherings honored another 1,281 participants.

26 HISD campuses attain Family Friendly Schools certification

As the first year of the Family Friendly Schools certification program draws to a close, the Family and Community Engagement department has certified 26 participating campuses as either gold, silver and/or bronze, and one as an honorable mention.

The FACE department established the certification program to recognize and honor the dedication and commitment of principals, faculty, and staff who are determined to ensure their families and communities work together toward a common goal. The program was founded to assist schools in three vital areas related to family engagement: building relationships with family and community, linking family events to students’ learning, and supporting parents’ advocacy.
