Class of 2013 sets new college scholarship record

Scholarship offers for the Class of 2013 continue to pour in. As of this week, HISD’s most recent graduates had been offered $186 million in college scholarships – a new record for the district.

“We expect that number to increase even more over the next few months as students continue to receive word about different scholarships they have applied for,” said Alan Summers, Assistant Superintendent of College and Career Readiness.

2012-2013 Annual Board of Education Student Awards

Each year the Board of Education recognizes distinguished seniors from HISD high schools in recognition of their total accomplishments exemplified by their character, academic achievement, leadership, and service. Selection is made by a school committee appointed by the principal and the award is presented by the board trustee during commencement exercises. An outstanding young man and young woman are selected as well as up to five honorable mention students from each high school. This year’s recipients are:

HISD Superintendent Terry Grier to Address Class of 2013 at Commencement Ceremonies

Nearly 9,000 seniors to graduate at 41 HISD graduation ceremonies

Starting today nearly 9,000 seniors will graduate from HISD high schools at 41 commencement ceremonies across Houston.  On Saturday and Sunday HISD Superintendent Terry Grier will be addressing the seniors at the commencement ceremonies for Chavez, Washington and East Early College high schools.  Members of the HISD Board of Education will also be taking part in commencement ceremonies across the district.

“It is such an honor to see thousands of students walk across the stage, ready to embark on a new chapter in their lives,” Dr. Grier said.  “At HISD we work hard to ensure all students are college and career ready, so we feel confident that every senior from the Class of 2013 is on the right path to success.”

Class of 2013 offered more than $150 million in college scholarships

HISD seniors have been offered more than $153 million in college scholarships and the total for the class of 2013 is still growing. So far, Westside High School tops the list with student scholarship offers totaling nearly $26 million. Many students have received multiple scholarship offers from a variety of different organizations, community groups, and corporations as well as individual colleges and universities. That includes Barbara Jordan valedictorian Alejandra Ortega who has raked in more than half a million dollars in scholarship offers.

President and CEO of Smart Financial Credit Union to be Keynote Speaker

The Houston Independent School District will be honoring the exceptional academic achievements of each high school’s top seniors at the annual Scholars Banquet today.  HISD Board of Education President Anna Eastman will be addressing the Class of 2013 valedictorians and salutatorians along with the keynote speaker CEO and President of Smart Financial Credit Union Gary Tuma.  Since its inception 79 years ago, Smart Financial Credit Union has been a valued community partner of HISD offering scholarships for graduating seniors.
