Hundreds of students born outside the U.S. and their families attended HISD’s 2022 DREAM Summit on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. It was the first time the event hosted by College & Career Readiness and Multilingual Education was held in person since the COVID-19 pandemic.

HISD to host DREAM Summit workshop to help DREAMers achieve higher learning
HISD’s 2022 DREAM Summit is set for Saturday, Dec. 10, and returns to in person for the first time since 2019.
The free event hosted by College & Career Readiness in collaboration with Multilingual Education will take place from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th Street, 77092.

For dreamers, it isn’t just about the hope of attaining citizenship but their dreams for a better education. The process of post-secondary education begins in high school, but for many, it isn’t an easy process. With a little help, however, their dreams can be achieved.
College Readiness and Multilingual will be hosting a virtual Dream Summit Senior Workshop from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 20 (sign up here). The workshop aims to assist students with applying for both college admission and financial aid.

Nineteen years to the day that Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya was reunified with his family at the border, hundreds of students and their families watched in awe on Saturday as he achieved what was once thought to be an impossible dream.
A profound silence filled the Hattie Mae White boardroom as the HISD graduate and DREAMer, who migrated to the U.S. from Honduras at the age of 13 after an arduous 45-day journey, was hooded by his mother and father to solidify his doctorate in Urban Education from Texas A&M University.
“My graduation is happening in this moment because of my support systems, because of the people that believed in me,” said Zelaya, who served as the keynote speaker for HISD’s fifth annual Dream Summit. “There will be times when you won’t have money to buy your next meal, but there will be people that believe in you so much, that out of nowhere they will help you.”

Event to help students apply for college, financial aid
College Readiness and Multilingual Programs will be hosting the fourth annual Dream Summit to assist students with college applications and the financial aid process on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St., Houston 77092.
High school students and their families are encouraged to attend the free event. Students should contact their campus college-access coordinator, counselor, or college-success adviser regarding transportation. Five seniors will have a chance to win a $500 scholarship for college.
The event aims to help HISD DREAMers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, visa holders, permanent residents, refugees, and asylum grantees, along with their families. Students will be able to speak with district representatives regarding financial aid requirements and get help with the college application process. Continue reading
Third annual Dream Summit draws record crowd with college, financial aid resources
HISD’s third annual Dream Summit, held Saturday at Hattie Mae White, drew more than 200 students eager to collect resources and information about college applications and financial aid – about double the attendance over last year.
The HISD Office of College and Career Readiness and Multilingual Programs event is held each year to offer assistance to HISD DREAMers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, visa holders, permanent residents, refugees, and asylum grantees, along with their families.
Assistant Superintendent of Multilingual Programs Gracie Guerrero said the goal of the event is twofold.
“It shows students who may think that they have no options to pursue anything beyond high school that there are specific resources for them. And it also brings together resources that we have in the district in one place to make it accessible,” Guerrero said. Continue reading
