Trustee Dávila to host Family Learning Academy on college readiness  

HISD Trustee Diana Dávila has partnered with the Family Learning Academy and the College Readiness Department to host the District VIII Parent Summit on College Readiness on Wednesday, May 4.

The free event will take place at Jackson Middle School (5100 Polk St., Houston, TX 77023) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will connect families with resources to help with their children’s post-secondary plans.

Trustee to host Family Learning Academy on emerging career opportunities Feb. 27

HISD Board of Education Member Rhonda Skillern-Jones has partnered with the Family and Community Engagement and Linked Learning Departments to host the District II Family Learning Academy on emerging career opportunities.

The free event will take place from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at Washington High School (119 East 39th Street, 77018), and will connect families with resources to help parents engage in their children’s education.

District IX Early Childhood Summit scheduled for Sept. 19

HISD Board of Education member Wanda Adams is partnering with the Family Learning Academy to host the District IX Early Childhood Summit on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The free event will take place at Reynolds Elementary School (9601 Rosehaven, 77051) from 8:00 a.m. until noon, and will connect families with resources to help parents engage in early childhood best practices and support students’ success.

The event will feature a panel of HISD departments, administrators, and community leaders, workshops, and a community resource fair with information for parents. District representatives will also be signing up families to participate in HISD’s HIPPY program, which provides a school-readiness program for parents of 3- to 5-year-olds in the district. Family Learning Academy offers five spring events for HISD families

This spring, the HISD Family Learning Academy will be offering five free events to connect families to resources to help students succeed in school, get into college, and find a rewarding career. Family Learning Academy partners with HISD Departments and community organizations to tailor every event to community needs.

Family Learning Academy ‘Super Saturdays’ continue until Nov. 8

HISD families from throughout the district are encouraged to attend one of four remaining “Super Saturday” sessions held throughout the months of October and November by the HISD Family and Community Engagement Department. The free sessions are part of the district’s Family Learning Academy (FLA), which is designed to give HISD parents and families the tools they need to help their child graduate from high school, enroll in college, and pursue a rewarding career.

Several hundred parents and their children attended the FLA event this past at Saturday at Furr High School which included sessions on a variety of district and community resources including: connecting kids to healthcare, navigating the HISD school choice application process, healthy eating, and how to help your student decide what to do after high school. Family Learning Academy offers parents resources for college and career planning

Houston ISD wants to help parents be ready for when their children graduate and go on to college or join the workforce. The district’s Family and Community Engagement Department is holding a Family Learning Academy to give tips and let parents know about the options available.
