In the wake of historic flooding across the Houston area this week, the HISD community has rallied to help in a number of ways, including assisting with the bus evacuations of residents in the Greenspoint area and setting up two school-based shelters on a moment’s notice.

As most of HISD and the City of Houston had a couple of unexpected days off this week because of rain and flooding, construction crews at the new Mark White Elementary School were on the job. With just 124 days until the start of the 2016-2017 school year, the workers know that each day is critical to ensuring that the school is ready in time to welcome students in August.
“It’s definitely a challenge because we are up against a hard deadline, but we have a good team in place working to make it happen,” said Brian Alling, HISD’s project manager of the Mark White Elementary project. “Both the contractor and architect deserve a lot of credit.”
With HISD schools and district offices having closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week due to widespread flooding across the city, here is some useful information and answers to questions you might have as students return to school today:
If students are unable to attend school because of safety or transportation concerns, will the absences be excused?

Houston Independent School District schools and offices will reopen at their regularly scheduled time on Wednesday, April 20.
HISD officials have been closely monitoring the weather forecast and have determined that classes will resume and all district administrative offices will reopen on Wednesday.
HISD schools and district offices were closed Monday and Tuesday due to the storms. The district’s designated inclement weather make-up days are Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27.
A few schools have experienced water damage and flooding as a result of the storm. Liberty High School is the only campus that is scheduled to be closed Wednesday due to storm damage. The district is still working to identify a temporary location for Liberty students and will notify students and parents directly.

Carnegie Vanguard High School has been ranked as the 10th best high school in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 Best High Schools rankings.
Three additional Houston Independent School District schools were ranked in the top 100 — DeBakey High School for Health Professions, which was ranked 29th, Eastwood Academy, which came in at the 50th spot, and Challenge Early College High School, which was ranked 78th. Continue reading
Houston Independent School District schools and offices will be closed Tuesday, April 19 as a precautionary measure due to the impact of recent flooding on regional mobility.
The Houston Independent School District has responded to the city’s request to open up Johnston and M.C. Williams middle schools as emergency shelters today to assist residents affected by storms that resulted in heavy flooding throughout the city.
Houston Independent School District schools and offices will be closed Monday, April 18 as a precautionary measure because of severe inclement weather and the related potential for dangerous road conditions.

This school year, nearly 600 families across the Houston area began receiving free lessons in their homes to prepare their children to succeed in HISD schools, before they ever set foot in a classroom.
Parents began participating in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program, which models simple educational activities for parents to practice with their three-, four-, and five-year-old children.
