There’s no better time for a child to begin their educational journey than pre-K, and in HISD, our youngest learners dream big!
Studies show that children who attend pre-K perform better academically and are more likely to graduate from high school and complete college.
HISD is home to more than 100 pre-K programs located in its elementary schools as well as nine early childhood centers and three Montessori schools. HISD is ready and prepared to meet new families and serve new students every day.
Throughout the day, students eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch, enjoy recess, and receive quality classroom instruction during workstations, small group lessons and read aloud time.
“Pre-K is the foundation for success,” said Halpin ECC Principal Constance Lathan. “We’re getting them ready for the next step and giving them a head start, and that’s what we do at the Early Childhood Centers. Our teachers are well trained, certified, and ready to give children whatever they need socially, emotionally, and academically.”
In addition to early learning, pre-K also gives children the opportunity to interact with other young students in a classroom setting before entering kindergarten.
“Pre-K gives our students the chance to learn social skills,” said Halpin ECC teacher Lori Yoel. “Raising their hands, sharing with their peers, learning how not to cry when we tell them no—these are all skills that we work on because, in pre-K, we must give our students the words and walk them through situations and scenarios, so they know what to say when these things come up in the future.”
In addition to HISD’s early childhood centers and Montessori schools, most of all HISD elementary schools offer prekindergarten programs as well.
