Designs are also available for purchase by the general public through Friday, Dec. 5
Each winter, HISD sends out holiday greeting cards to hundreds of people and organizations, including school principals, board members, legislators, local leaders, parent groups, and community partners. Since 2003, these cards have featured the artwork of district students, and this year, three designs were chosen to showcase their creative talents.
Fifth-grader Lexi Garcia (Scroggins ES) was selected at the elementary level for her quintet of polka-dot ornaments. The artist used pastels to draw pine needles against a dark background because “I thought it would look better with the watercolor.”

At the middle-school level, sixth-grader Gloria Xie’s (Pershing MS) submission gave a nod to the Lone Star State, with a detailed still life of a cowboy boot with poinsettias. She chose the colored-pencil design in part, she said, because, “There’s no snow in Texas.”
The high-school selection features a cheerful portrait of a traditional Santa Claus, complete with rosy cheeks and a sack full of toys slung over his back. Fredy Diaz, a junior at the Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center, said he chose the design in honor of his younger siblings, who eagerly anticipate Saint Nick’s visit each year.
Each of the 26 finalists in this year’s art contest received a packet of cards with their own design on it to distribute to friends and family members. Their designs are also available for purchase by the general public through HISD’s Printing Services department. Click here (.pdf) to see an order form.
The deadline to order all greeting cards is noon on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014.
