Planning and design for 2012 bond schools in final groups is ahead of schedule
HISD’s project teams are moving forward ahead of schedule with the planning and design of 21st century campuses in the last two groups of schools being renovated or rebuilt under the 2012 bond program.
As part of the process, Project Advisory Teams (PATs) made up of teachers, parents, students, community representatives, architects and staff, have been formed at each school and have begun meeting monthly. This puts Group 3 schools about six months ahead and Group 4 schools about 12 months ahead of schedule.
2012 bond schools celebrating construction with December ceremonies
Several schools will be celebrating major construction milestones in December as they hold groundbreaking or beam-signing ceremonies for their bond projects.
The Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School is hosting a groundbreaking at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, to mark the start of work on a new $32.2 million facility in the Galleria area. The new school, located at 5440 W. Alabama, will be a K-8 campus with the goal of creating bilingual students.
M/WBE architectural firm designing new 21st century Furr HS
Editor’s note: This profile is part of an occasional series on minority- or women-owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) that do business with HISD. The district’s minimum M/WBE goal levels are 20 percent for all levels of purchasing and construction, and 25 percent for professional services. In the 2007 bond program, that commitment reached nearly 34 percent. In the 2012 program, contracts awarded are expected to top 53 percent. Continue reading
Community meetings scheduled to share design concepts and site plans for 2012 bond schools
Editor’s note: The story has updated to reflect that the community meeting at Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion School has been postponed to a later date that has yet to be scheduled.
The Houston Independent School District has scheduled two additional community meetings to discuss the progress being made within the 2012 bond program, which will renovate or rebuild 40 schools to create 21st century facilities.
The meetings for Sterling High School and Parker Elementary are part of the district’s commitment to host at least three community meetings for each bond campus during the different phases of the building program: planning, design and construction.
This will be the third community meeting for Sterling, and the second for Parker in a process designed to encourage collaboration and participation. The goal is to present the work done so far in the design process and to share site plans, exterior drawings, final designs and construction schedules.
Input from the community meetings is used to guide the work of each school’s Project Advisory Team, which is made up of teachers, staff, administrators, students and community members. The team provides recommendations on all phases of the projects, which will undergo a final scope-to-budget review before construction begins.
The meetings will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m
