HAIS recognized as 2014 National Blue Ribbon School

The Houston Academy for International Studies has been named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon Exemplary High Performing School.

National Blue Ribbons are awarded annually to schools to validate the hard work of students and educators. To be recognized as an exemplary high performing school, a school must have its students test in the top 15 percent in the state in both reading and math, have subgroups test in the top 40 percent in the state or have a graduation rate in the top 15 percent in the state. Flying with confidence: New simulators at Sterling HS prepare students for career takeoff

Moments after the bell rings for the last class period of the day, Sterling High School student Jacqueline Vickers is buckling her seatbelt inside a flight simulator and preparing for takeoff.

With her hands resting on the flight yoke, she reviews the flight control panel and gazes at the video screen that stretches across the cockpit and shows a digital picture view of Houston.

Sterling HS automotive students get job training with trucking company

The Sterling High School automotive program is getting a boost from a partnership with International Trucks of Houston – Kyrish Trucks, which is offering students job shadowing, field training, and internship opportunities in the trucking industry.

The company recognized five students in the program at an awards celebration Wednesday for the commitment they’ve shown throughout their internship. HISD Career Readiness program leaders had an opportunity to tour the trucking facility and see the partnership in action as students worked alongside diesel technicians. Continue reading

HISD Up Close, hosted by HISD Board of Education President Juliet Stipeche, explores the initiatives, educational programs and information about the school district that is of interest to students, parents, teachers and the community. In September, Stipeche spoke with Cindy Puryear, the district’s literacy director, and Garcia Elementary School Principal Aaron Dominguez about HISD’s Read Houston Read program. Puryear discussed the formation of the HISD Student Congress with the organization’s founding members. Finally, Stipeche visited with Rice University’s award winning mathematician, Dr. Richard Tapia. Texas College Night encourages students to find the right fit for higher education

More than 1,000 HISD high school students met with admissions representatives from a variety of colleges and universities Tuesday at Texas College Night at the University of Houston.

Students learned about college admissions requirements, academic programs, and financial aid and scholarship opportunities at Texas’ top colleges and universities such as UH, the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, and Sam Houston State University.

5 seniors named National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists

Five Houston ISD seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The program, which is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, awards scholarship to academically promising black students. About 700 of the 1,600 semifinalists will go on to receive scholarships worth $2,500 each. Continue reading
