On Sept. 25, 2013, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced that HISD was the winner of the 2013 Broad Prize in Urban Education. It was the second time for the district to win the award. 2-Day Workshop Focuses on New Designs for 4 High Schools
Four HISD high schools slated to be rebuilt under the 2012 bond program hit a milestone Thursday when their projects officially moved into the design phase.
“This is an exciting event,” Dan Bankhead, HISD’s general manager of Facilities Design, told a group of about 75 people involved in the planning of the new Furr, Sterling, Sharpstown and Lee high schools. “We’re getting ready to set the course for our program.”

Board of Education to Fast-Track New Delmar-Tusa Fieldhouse

The HISD Board of Education approved a recommendation at its regular monthly meeting to fast-track the construction of a new Delmar-Tusa Fieldhouse by demolishing the existing facility while design for the new facility is underway. The goal is to have the site ready for construction as soon as possible.
The Delmar-Tusa Fieldhouse, located at the athletic complex at 2020 Mangum Road, adjacent to the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, was built in 1958 and is currently in poor condition with major roof leaks, flooding problems in the locker rooms and a sports medicine area that falls short of athletic league standards.
Atherton Elementary to Celebrate Dedication of New School
School, constructed under 2007 bond program, opened to students this year
What: Atherton Elementary will dedicate its new 750-student school, which opened to students on the first day of school this year. Events will include student performances, special guest speakers, classroom tours of the new facility and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Friday is Houston Texans Spirit Day in HISD
The Houston Texans kick off their 2013 season next week with a game against the San Diego Chargers.
In recognition of the team’s many contributions to public education and to HISD students in particular, all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to show their support by wearing Texans team attire or colors and jeans on “Houston Texans Spirit Day,” which will be this Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.
Employees are also invited to submit digital photos of their support to hisdphotos@yahoo.com.
Hartsfield ES Kicks off New School Year With Community Walk
In order to foster relationships between school and community, Hartsfield ES reached out to more than 350 homes during the first-ever Welcome Back Community Walk. It was an opportunity for new Principal Alecia Bell and her staff to interact with students and their families.
Bell launched the theme “Transforming Lives – Creating Leaders” with T-shirts featuring a picture of a transformer that symbolizes the change ahead. Wearing the shirts, the staff went door-to-door introducing themselves and delivering school-enrollment forms, volunteer information, and the school calendar.
Chase to Distribute Backpacks and School Supplies to Sharpstown High School
Donations valued at more than $30,000 to benefit nearly 1,300 students
Just in time for the start of the new academic year, Chase and its partners have donated $30,000 in school supplies to the students of Sharpstown High School. The presentation to students will be made in the school auditorium at 7504 Bissonnet on Tuesday, August 27 at 8 a.m.
All the freshmen at this Apollo 20 turnaround campus will receive a new backpack full of schools supplies while students from 10th to 12th grade will get a variety of school supplies such as pens, highlighters, spiral notebooks and binders to ensure they are ready for a successful back to school.
