February Nurses of the Month named at DeAnda ES and Young Women’s College Prep

Students from Young Women’s College Prep Academy waited quietly in the sunny, glass-enclosed commons area of the campus as they waited for Carla Carter, the school nurse.

As she rounded the corner, a line of teachers began to cheer and wave pom-poms, while the students held up signs celebrating Carter being named the HISD Secondary Nurse of the Month for February.

HISD Nutrition Services honored for efforts to feed students

The Houston Independent School District was ranked No. 4 among the state’s top large school districts for its outstanding child nutrition program, according to the 2021 Kroger School Food Rankings released Tuesday.

Established by Children At Risk in partnership with Kroger, the rankings recognize top-performing school food programs that go above and beyond to ensure low-income students have access to healthy food.

HISD Interim Superintendent joins volunteers working alongside First Lady at Houston Food Bank

Houston Independent School District Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan joined dozens of volunteers gathered Friday at the Houston Food Bank to work alongside First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as she packaged food and water for Houston families.

The visit was part of a multi-stop tour of Houston by President Biden and the first lady to survey the damage caused by last week’s historic winter storm that led to widespread power and water outages across the state.

Sinclair ES to add modular building to address increasing enrollment

Sinclair Elementary School will receive a new modular building ahead of the 2021-2022 school year as part of a planned expansion to accommodate more students at the growing campus.

The school will use the new building to incrementally grow capacity, one grade level at a time, ahead of a projected increase in student enrollment.

Teachers welcomed back as virtual instruction resumes post-storm

The robot in the front hall was covered in silver wrapping paper, complete with glowing eyes, a moving head, and arms made of red pipe cleaners. As she looked at the robots—a part of a project by students at Briscoe Elementary—Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan marveled at the students’ creativity.

Lathan was visiting the school, located in the East End just off Brays Bayou, as the first stop of the day. She visited a pair of HISD elementary schools to welcome teachers back after classes were canceled for more than a week due to the winter storm.

HISD Teacher Recruitment to host Experienced Teacher Job Fair on March 6

The Houston Independent School District’s Teacher Recruitment is hosting a virtual districtwide job fair for experienced teachers on Saturday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Candidates will have the opportunity to meet principals and leadership for on-the-spot interviews, and pool-approved applicants can receive job offers on the spot as well. Come be a part of the largest school district in Texas with more than 280 schools serving nearly 196,000 students.

Fifth six weeks selection period for in-person or virtual instruction begins March 1

With the fifth six weeks of the 2020-2021 school year approaching, HISD families have the option starting Monday to revise their selection for either in-person or virtual instruction for students. The first day of the fifth six weeks is March 22.

The selection process remains the same. Parents will have from Monday, March 1, through Friday, March 5, to make their selection through the HISD Connect Parent Portal “Forms” section. If parents would like to keep their selection as-is, no action is needed. The current selected mode of instruction will carry over to the fifth six-weeks grading period.

HISD, Houston Food Bank feed thousands of families impacted by winter storm

Cars began lining up at NRG Stadium as early as 5:30 a.m. on Sunday as Houston families sought fresh water and food in the wake of this week’s devastating winter storm and the havoc it wreaked across the state.

Some in line lost food because of mass power outages. Others don’t have access to clean water because of citywide boil water notices. 

“It’s like starting from zero,” said Sara Cavitt, who lost electricity for more than 48 hours during the winter storm. “I’m a single mom of three young daughters, and I was denied SNAP benefits. This food donation will help us immensely.”

Community food distributions planned to help with winter storm recovery

The Houston Independent School District is partnering with Houston Food Bank to host community food distributions over the next three days to ensure Houston families have access to food as they recover from the winter storm.

The community distributions will be held it three different locations over the next three days — Barnett Stadium on Saturday, NRG on Sunday, and Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Monday.
