Videos highlight progress on concepts for new Furr, Sharpstown high schools

HISD released two videos Tuesday that showcase the progress in the planning and design of Furr and Sharpstown high schools, which are being rebuilt under the district’s 2012 $1.89 billion bond program.

The video featuring Furr High School highlights work that is being done on the project advisory team, the collaboration with the architect and community input on the project. Preliminary drawings of what the campus could look like include flexible learning spaces with sustainable touches like repurposed wood from the current campus gymnasium.

When Young Men’s College Preparatory Academy says goodbye to its 1920s-era building next year, the school may take a few pieces of history with it.

The original 1929 building cornerstone that sits on the west corner of the middle school building may be extracted to include in the new YMCPA facility that will be built in mid- to late 2014 with funds from the HISD 2012 bond program.

Lee HS Grad Leads Tech Solutions Company to $18 Million in Business with HISD

Editor’s note: This profile is part of an occasional series on minority or women-owned companies that do business with HISD. The district’s minimum M/WBE goal levels are 20 percent for all levels of purchasing and construction, and 25 percent for professional services. In the 2007 bond program, that commitment reached nearly 34 percent. In the 2012 program, the contracts awarded to date reflect a nearly 51 percent M/WBE commitment.

Carnegie Vanguard Honored by Neighborhood Business Group

Carnegie Vanguard High School is being celebrated as a gem in its Montrose neighborhood.

The Museum District Business Alliance presented the school with a New Construction Community Improvement Award and a $250 donation at its annual Holiday and Community Awards Luncheon on Thursday at Hotel Zaza. Two Schools to Plant Dozens of Fruit Trees on Their Campuses

Lantrip Elementary also receives $20,000 grant for campus beautification project

Lantrip Elementary School and Austin High School are the recipients of two grants from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation that will fund the planting of 25-30 trees at each campus in the coming week.

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF), an international nonprofit organization dedicated to planting fruit trees to improve health, strengthen communities and combat climate change, has joined the East End’s GreenSchools! Greenbelt, which currently includes Austin, Lantrip and Jackson Middle schools.

The GreenSchools! Greenbelt initiative, funded by the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council, connects schools and communities through campus and community greening efforts in Houston’s East End.

HSLECJ Community Urged to Participate in Planning for New School

No final decision has been made yet on where to put the new High School for Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice – but that isn’t stopping HISD staff, parents and community members from planning for the future.

“Push us to deliver you the best facility,” said Dan Gohl, HISD’s chief academic officer. “Engage us, doubt us, question us – but participate.”

At a community meeting Thursday, Gohl urged the audience to think about the generations of students to come who will be using the new building and what they need to be learning to be successful in careers in law enforcement and criminal justice.

Students Welcomed to New Sherman Elementary School

Katherine Smith Elementary also unveils new administration and classroom wing

Sherman Elementary School students admired the smart boards and cubby spaces and helped sharpen pencils on Monday as teachers prepared to start class for the first time at their new building. 

“It’s awesome because it’s all new,” said fourth-grader Xavier Cegueda, who was met with hugs and smiles from school administrators and staff who helped students find their new classroom.

In 21st Century Learning Spaces, It’s OK to Write on the Walls

Imagine a school where students can write and do Google searches on the walls of their classroom.

“How wonderful would it be for kids to have access to this kind of technology on their classroom wall?” said Furr High School Principal Bertie Simmons. “You can write on it. You can search the Internet with it. It’s just a really neat and innovative way to teach a class.”

Some classroom walls in HISD’s newest campuses may be getting an upgrade with modular magnetic glass walls created by DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) Environmental Solutions. The company, based in Calgary, Alberta, manufactures the walls, which are attracting attention as schools embrace 21st century learning environments.
