HISD and Astros Foundation team up for graduation retention

HISD’s Sunrise Centers collaborated with the Astros Foundation for the District’s fourth annual Phone Bank event on June 18. The goal is to reach out to students who have either dropped out of school or not registered for the new school year and inform them of the options and resources available to help on their path to high school graduation.

HISD students slide into summer reading with help from Houston Astros

Excitement was in the air at Oak Forest Elementary School on Monday, June 3, and not only because it was the last Monday of the 2023-2024 school year. Annually, the Astros Foundation and Reliant Energy team up for Slide into Summer Reading, a program intended to help students avoid the “summer slide,” or the loss of academic knowledge and habits formed over the school year. The schools with the most students registered for the program by May 13 were rewarded with a Slide into Summer Reading party at their schools, and Oak Forest won in the category of large public/charter school with more than 300 registrations.

HISD partners with the Astros Foundation to encourage student re-enrollment

A quiet meeting room on the third floor of Minute Maid Park became a command center of dialing phones on June 28 and 29 as HISD employee volunteers rallied to contact unenrolled students and encourage them to come back to school in the fall.

HISD alum and health pioneer memorialized in Earth Day tree planting

HISD’s Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy community will be planting 20 trees in one hour on Saturday, April 22, in honor of the late Dr. Polly Sparks Turner. The Earth Day initiative is in partnership with the Astros Foundation and Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The inaugural Cactus Jack HBCU Classic is set for Feb. 17-19 at Minute Maid Park, and HISD high school students are invited to attend the event for free on Saturday following a college fair.
