On May 7, the City of Houston unveiled four Solid Waste Management vehicles adorned with the artwork of four talented HISD students. The artists are the winners of the second annual Truck Art Contest, a competition devised and executed by HISD’s Energy and Sustainability Department in partnership with the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department to increase awareness of recycling and waste diversion in the city’s youth.

HISD students take their creativity to the streets at 37th Annual Art Car Parade
On April 13, students from 26 HISD campuses participated in the 37th Annual Art Car Parade. The parade is a treasured community tradition and the culmination of months of hard, creative work each year. Students at participating schools collaborated during their art classes and after-school time to construct their unique Art Cars. The morning of the parade, students gathered to showcase their creations alongside vehicles designed and built by scores of other artists from across the city. Crowds came out to marvel at the fantastic works of art on wheels along a route that followed Allen Parkway through downtown Houston.

For 58 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has held its School Art Program, an opportunity for students to compete to earn scholarships and have their artwork displayed at the rodeo’s Hayloft Gallery. Of more than 650 artists, 52 HISD students were finalists, 12 were winners, and all were honored with a special reception.

The Orange Show Art Car Festival and Parade is an annual event wherein artists work to create the most visionary and inventive decorated cars.

Student artists were celebrated at an awards ceremony and reception for HISD’s 32nd annual Holiday Greeting Card Competition on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Seventeen schools submitted one work of art for consideration, and three winners, along with two special recognition winners, were chosen by Superintendent Mike Miles to be featured on thousands of holiday cards that he will send to HISD’s many community partners this year.
