HISD and U.S. Soccer Foundation bring soccer to school for 29,000 students

On Feb. 19, 67 physical educators at 72 schools districtwide partnered with the U.S. Soccer Foundation for Soccer for Success curriculum training, training designed to help educators to teach the fundamentals of soccer as well as activities that will help students develop healthy habits and improve their physical and health literacy. More than 29,000 students throughout HISD will enjoy this new soccer-specific unit as part of their PE classes in the coming months.

Neff theater production brings students out of their shell; teaches confidence, community

Since October, Neff Elementary fifth graders have been engaged in a massive undertaking in their creative arts classes, one at which many fully grown adults might balk. Students—112 of them—are working together to produce, stage and star in a production of Aladdin Jr. The four months of hard, collaborative work are about to pay off as the show opens tonight for a limited two-night run.

HISD’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department invited families to the Children’s Museum of Houston (CMH) for HISD Day at the Children’s Museum on Monday, Feb. 19. This special event provided an opportunity for families to bond, explore, and learn together, all while taking advantage of this free educational opportunity.

HISD kicks off hiring season with job fair and reimagined employee offerings

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) kicked off the hiring and recruiting season with a first-of-its-kind job fair on Saturday, February 24, at Sharpstown High School. More than 450 candidates attended the event to learn about working in the District’s New Education System (NES) and non-NES schools.

HISD students focus on the future in unique Technology Applications elective

Most middle schoolers wouldn’t envision themselves producing and starring in their own TV show, writing lines of code to program 3-D prints, or building computers from scratch, but for Burbank Middle School Technology Applications students, that’s an average Wednesday. Under the guidance of Technology teacher Sergio Luviano, Burbank students have the opportunity to master complex technological concepts through engaging projects and real-world application in this unique elective class.

HISD student artists take home ribbons, scholarships at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

For 58 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has held its School Art Program, an opportunity for students to compete to earn scholarships and have their artwork displayed at the rodeo’s Hayloft Gallery. Of more than 650 artists, 52 HISD students were finalists, 12 were winners, and all were honored with a special reception.

HISD counselors gather for 2024 Counselors’ Appreciation Meeting

Feb. 5-9 marked National School Counseling Week, a time for school communities to come together in appreciation and recognition of the important contributions of our tireless school counselors. This year’s National School Counseling Week theme is “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” From class schedules to emotional regulation, all the way to choosing and applying to college, school counselors are a vital resource on a student’s educational journey.

HISD Board of Managers approves 2024-2025 school calendar

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Managers approved the 2024-2025 academic calendar. It provides more learning time than HISD students have had in the past – an increase from 172 instructional days to 180. Research indicates that students benefit from more time in school.
