HISD Community Partnerships is joining local organizations to spread holiday cheer, food, and supplies in a drive-through distribution event. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Hattie Mae White east parking lot, families in the community are welcome to pick up a variety of items.

Stephen F. Austin High School was selected as a recipient of the GRAMMY Signature Schools Award. The GRAMMY Signature Schools Award is designed to honor public high school music programs across the country with special awards and grants based primarily on need and a compelling plan to address that need.
The GRAMMY Museum awarded a grant of $5,500 to Stephen F. Austin and hosted a virtual question and answer session on Friday with over 60 students in the performing arts department. Industry professional guests on the panel included moderator David R. Sears, GRAMMY Museum vice president of education of GRAMMY In the Schools, Larry Batiste, music director and owner of LaSugar Bear Entertainment and producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/composer/arranger Jason Goldman.

The first HISD Office of Talent Teacher Appreciation Award was awarded to Elmore Elementary School’s Monica Shelvin on Friday.
Shelvin, a 25-year veteran teacher, has been with HISD for 21-years. The first-grade teacher was very surprised by what she described as a “welcome, welcome welcome reward” after what hasn’t been the easiest couple of years to be an educator.

To answer any questions, HISD is hosting two virtual town halls providing the community the opportunity to ask vaccine questions to a panel that includes a school parent and local public health experts. One town hall will be in English and the other in Spanish.

At Wednesday’s principals meeting at the Kingdom Builder’s Center, principals and district staff came together for the first in-person meeting since the start of the pandemic. To celebrate the occasion, as well as the holiday season, an ugly holiday sweater contest was held, and the HISD principals came dressed to (not) impress.

The future of HISD is currently being mapped out after feedback from students, parents, teachers, and community members, as well as input from elected officials, partners, and area leaders.
Superintendent Millard House, who has reached 100 days as the leader of the largest school district in Texas, said he’s spent his whole life preparing for this challenge.

As the morning sun transforms the dark Houston sky into a bright blue, customer service representatives answer requests from campus administrators, concerned employees, and sometimes worried parents.
They work at HISD Customer Care Call Center, a 24-hour operation tasked with everything from answering parents’ transportation-related questions to processing campus work orders and maintenance requests such as air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical issues.
HISD Police Department surprises winning class for the ‘Name That Pup’ contest
Music, dancing, pizza, and puppy kisses were the recipe for a great day at Sutton Elementary as Sandra Coley’s fifth-grade class celebrated their grand prize for winning the HISD Police Name that Pup contest.
Earlier this fall, classrooms across HISD submitted votes to rename their newest team member and the department’s first-ever comfort dog. And the winning name suits her well—Justice.
