Students and staff at DeBakey High School for Health Professions will soon have a new facility in the heart of the Texas Medical Center that will allow easier access to some of the best facilities in the world.

Bond Oversight Committee members Bob Eury and Phoebe Tudor

The Bond Oversight Committee held its third quarter meeting on Tuesday, getting an update on the status of 2012 bond building projects and a preview of upcoming fourth quarter activities.

About 90 percent of the Group 1 Schools have entered into the Construction Documents phase and are working through the regulatory process and permitting with the city. All schools in this group are on track to begin construction work before the end of this year.

HISD facilities planner awarded scholarship to attend CEFPI World Congress

Princess Jenkins, a facilities planner for HISD’s 2012 bond program,  was recently selected by the Council of Educational Facilities Planners International (CEFPI), Southern Region Foundation to receive an all-expenses paid scholarship to attend the CEFPI World Congress in Portland, Oregon.

Conference attendees toured new schools in the Pacific Northwest area Oct. 3-6, attended interactive sessions and presentations on state-of-the art planning and design principles, and visited the industry expo, which highlighted the latest in materials, equipment, and systems for 21st century schools.

HISD receives Mayor’s Proud Partner Award for environmental program

ProudPartner_102714Houston Independent School District became the recipient of a Proud Partner Award in the 2014 Mayor’s Proud Partner Awards on Monday. The district accepted the award for its National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools Program, along with five additional recognitions, during the 30th annual luncheon hosted by Keep Houston Beautiful.

The Mayor’s Proud Partners Luncheon, hosted by Keep Houston Beautiful, recognizes outstanding work by local organizations and individuals who aim to improve Houston’s landscape through environmental and beautification projects.

A community meeting was held Monday evening to discuss design plans and the construction timeline for the new 21st century campus at Lee High School.

Through HISD’s 2012 bond program, $73.8 million has been allocated to build the new Lee HS campus. The new 240,000-square-foot facility will include state-of-the-art technology with flexibility to allow for future upgrades. The two-story school will be divided into four neighborhood wings with open spaces and plenty of windows to maximize natural light.

Condit Elementary parents and neighbors gathered for a community meeting Thursday evening to hear about the construction timeline and see final design plans for the school’s new 21st century campus. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 1, and construction will begin before the end of the year.

About 25 parents, staff and community members gathered for a final meeting to go over the construction process and design plans for the new High School for Performing and Visual Arts on Tuesday. HSPVA is one of 40 schools throughout HISD that will be rebuilt or renovated under the 2012 bond program.

Construction activity ramping up for Group 1 schools in 2012 bond

Bond WaltripThe construction phase for the 17 schools in Group 1 of the 2012 bond is gearing up, and this means that all of the work, previously being done behind the scenes, will move front and center.

To prepare sites for construction, a number of schools are undergoing demolition, utility work, and installation of fencing and other safety measures. Throughout this part of the project, construction firms have committed to implement strict safety procedures and to minimize the impact on students and the community.

Pre-bid meeting held for potential subcontractors on Sterling HS bond project

sterling_pre_bidCadence McShane Construction held a pre-bid meeting at Sterling High School on Friday for companies interested in working on the school’s new building project. As part of HISD’s 2012 bond, $72.3 million was allocated to construct a new 21st century campus for Sterling.

More than 80 potential subcontractors attended Friday’s meeting, which was the company’s second and final pre-bid meeting for the Sterling project prior to the October 22 bid deadline.
