Best Featured Performer winners from HSPVA’s Avenue Q, Kyle Legacion and Emily Scott.

Two students from the High School for Performing and Visual Arts have been honored with a Tommy Tune Award for their performance in the campus’ production of Avenue Q, School Edition.

Students Kyle Legacion and Emily Scott were jointly named best feature performer as the “Bad Idea Bears.”

Lee HS boys’ soccer team plays in state semifinals game

Lee High School’s boys’ soccer team will play in the 4A UIL soccer tournament on Friday, and their classmates held a pep rally on Thursday to show how much they support the Generals.

Lee (19-4-1) will face the team from Pharr Valley View (25-2) in Georgetown, Texas, on Friday. If they win that game, they’ll advance to the finals and play the winner of the semifinal game between Northwest Nelson and Frisco Wakeland. This is the first time the Generals have played in the state tournament.

Board president Stipeche’s broadcast answers questions on new high school pathways

Board of Trustees President Juliet Stipeche’s premiere broadcast on HISD-TV is streaming online, and she tackles the complex and looming issue of major changes to high school, starting with this year’s eighth-graders who are now planning their educational pathways.

Stipeche interviews Lupita Hinojosa and Mark White about what HISD is doing to implement the package of state education legislation known as House Bill 5.

Pep Rally planned for state-bound Lee Generals

Soccer program is district’s first to compete in UIL contest

In honor of the Lee High School boys’ soccer team’s trip to compete for a state title, the band and cheerleading team will host a pep rally at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17 in the school’s auditorium (6529 Beverly Hill Ln. 77057). The spirit-fest for a 19-4-1 team is icing on the cake for a history-making season. The soccer program is the Houston Independent School District’s first to compete in the state’s UIL tournament. The Generals will face Pharr Valley View (25-2) in the 4A Semifinals on Friday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be played at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex.

Historic day for 4 HISD schools with new mascots

School communities at four HISD campuses with controversial mascots have selected new names, which were announced Tuesday, April 15, at a news conference at Hamilton Middle School by their principals and Superintendent Terry Grier.

In January, the HISD Board of Education approved a new policy that prohibited the use of any race or ethnic group as a mascot or nickname.

Four schools were identified as not aligning to the policy, and Tuesday, they received their new names:

It’s Kashmere Junior and Senior Day in Houston!

Second-year HISD teacher Adeeb Barqawi’s physics students at Kashmere High School received a mayoral proclamation today from Mayor Annise Parker and Council Member Jerry Davis naming Tuesday, April 15, 2014 “Kashmere High School Junior and Senior Day” in Houston. The proclamation is in recognition of Barqawi’s students receiving the highest passage rate on the physics district level assessment (DLA) in HISD last fall. More than 85 percent of junior and senior students passed at the 70 percentile mastery level on the physics DLA.

SAT School Day offered at no cost to high school juniors

Houston ISD students will take the SAT college admission test at district high schools Wednesday, during what is a called SAT School Day. The district-wide initiative gives juniors the opportunity to take the test during a normal school day at no cost.

“This is a great opportunity for high school juniors to overcome barriers of any kind and focus on taking the SAT,” said Assistant Superintendent for College Readiness Rick Cruz. “More than 9,000 students at all HISD high schools will take advantage of the testing day.”

Westside High School culinary students deliver award-winning meal at inaugural competition

Competition was stiff on Saturday, but the culinary team from Westside High School took home the trophy at the inaugural Cooking Up Change Competition to showcase tasty and nutritious school food.

“I have a deeper respect and knowledge for all that our cafeteria workers do to prepare food for all of the students in HISD,” said Westside’s Barrosha Boykin as she and her team accepted their trophies and prizes at the ARAMARK-sponsored contest, held at Rice University.
