HISD celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. All across Houston Independent School District, we are honoring women’s contributions to American history and raising awareness to promote equality in the classroom through education.

Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote. Due to the pandemic and safety protocols, many planned celebrations did not take place.

So the National Women’s History Alliance is extending the celebration through 2021 with the theme “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced.”

Teacher at The Rice School named Teacher of the Month for March

If you ask Shalisha Kemp why she loves teaching, she’ll tell you it’s because of her “Peter Pan mindset.”

“You have to think like a child to reach out to children, to be able to guide them, to lead them to greater success in adulthood,” Kemp said.

Whatever it may be that sets her apart, it is certainly working.

The second-grade teacher at The Rice School was named HISD’s Teacher of the Month for March, with a surprise parade at her school.

National School Breakfast Week shines light on food insecurity

Stationed in the hallway near the cafeteria, Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center junior Christopher Nazario ate his favorite breakfast cereal while going over the previous night’s homework on his laptop.

Like many across the country, the Nazario family budget took a recent hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. Having access to a healthy school breakfast served at no charge was a big help.

“Eating breakfast here helps my family, and it helps me because I can use the time in the morning to do homework,” Nazario said. “I know they offer a lot of different items for breakfast each morning. I hope they will serve pancakes sometime soon.”

National School Breakfast Week kicks off today (Monday, March 8) with the theme Blast Off with a Healthy School Breakfast. Nutrition Services is celebrating the week by shining a light on the role school breakfast plays in student success.

Associate Teachers of the Month recognized at Lawson MS, Kelso ES

The outdoor hallways of Kelso Elementary School may be covered, but that did not stop Associate Teacher Joyce Asberry from hesitating when the principal called her to the main building. As the cloudy skies of the morning gave way to a downpour, Asberry tentatively stepped out on her walk towards the front.

But as she stepped into the school cafeteria, her worries about the dreary weather washed away immediately. Waiting for her there was her family—daughter, granddaughter, and 91-year-old mother—as well as students, teachers, the principal and the HISD HR.

She was surprised as the February Associate Teacher of the Month for HISD.
