HISD transitioning to virtual and/or face-to-face instruction on March 1

HISD schools and offices will remain closed through Tuesday, February 23.  There will be no virtual or in-person learning on Monday or Tuesday, and employees will not report to work unless notified by their supervisor.

All central office staff, principals, and campus-based staff will return to work in-person on Wednesday, February 24. Teachers have the option to return to campuses or work remotely on Wednesday (2/24) before returning in person on Thursday (2/25).

HISD to remain closed through Friday, Feb. 19, as weather continues to impact families

As the weather conditions continue to impact many families, all HISD schools and offices will remain closed on Friday, Feb. 19. There will be no virtual or in-person learning. Employees will not report to work, unless notified by their supervisor.

All athletic events and food distributions for Friday and the weekend are also cancelled.

Please note that employees who are required to physically report to work will be notified by their supervisor.

As always, student and staff safety will guide decision making as the district continues to monitor weather and road conditions.

HISD remain closed Feb. 17-Feb. 18 due to winter storm impact

As the freezing conditions continue to impact many families, HISD’s schools and offices will remain close on Wednesday, February 17 and Thursday, February 18. There will be no virtual or in-person learning.  Employees will not report to work, unless notified by their supervisor.  All athletic events and food distributions for Wednesday and Thursday also are cancelled.

If conditions permit, all HISD schools and offices will transition to remote operations for Friday, February 19.  All students will transition to asynchronous virtual learning, and district staff will work remotely.  Students can use the day to reinforce learning using the digital resources found on the HUB or HISD @ H.O.M.E. Students also can submit current or late assignments on the HUB and will not be required to follow a set daily classroom schedule.

HISD to close Feb. 15-16 as freezing weather approaches

Due to freezing temperatures in the coming days, combined with the possibility of widespread precipitation and potentially hazardous road conditions, the Houston Independent School District will close schools and offices on Monday, Feb. 15 and Tuesday, Feb. 16. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no virtual or in-person learning, and staff will not report to work.

Students can use both days to reinforce learning using the digital resources found on the HUB or HISD @ H.O.M.E. Students also can submit current or late assignments on the HUB

North Houston Early College HS nominated as 2021 national Blue Ribbon School

The Houston Independent School District’s North Houston Early College High School has been nominated by the Texas Education Agency as a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School.

North Houston Early College High School (NHECHS) is one of 26 public schools in Texas and the only one in HISD that received a nomination from the state’s education agency. NHECHS is housed on the Northline Houston Community College campus and follows a dual-credit model, offering students the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree.

Helms ES, Tanglewood MS leaders named Principals of the Year

As she stood in the upstairs teachers’ lounge at Helms Dual Language Elementary School, Lola Perejón was talking to her parents on FaceTime, who were calling in from Spain.

Perejón, the principal at Helms, does not normally call her family during a regular school day, but this was a special occasion.

Golfcrest ES teacher named February Teacher of the Month

The skies may have been overcast and dreary over Golfcrest Elementary School, but the mood inside the school’s cafeteria was decidedly brighter.

Students waited with colorful signs, balloons framed the stage, and decorations filled the tables as fifth-grade science teacher Ruth Giles entered the room.

“What’s going on? I’m in shock,” Giles said as she passed through the lines of cafeteria tables, headed toward Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan on the other side of the room. Giles, who has been with Golfcrest Elementary for three years, was named the Sterling McCall Teacher of the Month for February, and this socially distanced party was in honor of her.

49 HISD schools named to Texas Honor Roll list

The recently released list of Texas Honor Roll schools selected by the Educational Results Partnership includes 49 Houston Independent School District campuses.

The schools were selected by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) for 2019-2020  based on students’ academic performance, closing achievement gaps among groups of students, utilizing evidence-based instructional practices, and having a defined system-wide mission of college and career readiness for all students.

HISD crossing guard reflects on growing up in civil rights era, stresses importance of education

At 19, Mary Campbell was more interested in working and socializing than paying attention to the injustices of the world — she wasn’t politically savvy or familiar with nuanced discussions about race.

But that changed when she was invited to her first political assembly in 1970, just two years after Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed. When she received that invite, she just knew she had to go.

“She told me, ‘you’re going to learn something today,’” she said, recalling the words of the friend who invited her to her first meeting and served as the catalyst to her educational awakening.
