Renovations, construction underway at HISD high schools

A recent swimming pool renovation at Waltrip High School features lane ropes, starting blocks and a new timer system, making the pool competition ready.

The work is the latest visible milestone for the Oak Forest high school, which is moving forward on commitments made in both the 2007 and 2012 bond programs. In the southern part of the city, work is also getting underway on a new building addition at Worthing High School.

Video shows progress on additions that will modernize Worthing HS

HISD released a new video that shows progress on the planning and design of a new two-story building addition at Worthing High School.

Worthing will receive a building addition under HISD’s 2007 bond program and a new building that will be funded by the district’s 2012 $1.89 billion bond program. The facility will house academics, performance arts, athletics, and other departments.

Contractor event offers opportunity to network on Worthing HS building project

More than 70 subcontractors were encouraged to bid now for construction work for a new building addition at Worthing High School during a meet and greet Wednesday with the school’s construction managers.

“The people here today are very interested in the 2012 bond,” said HISD supplier diversity specialist Vanessa McGinnis. “We’re giving local subcontractors and minority- and women-owned businesses an opportunity to talk one-on-one with the construction manager at risk for this project, so they can learn how their business and services may be used for this project.”

Sterling and Worthing Communities Give Input on Design Concepts for New Schools

Nearly 100 people turned out this week to weigh in on proposed design concepts for Worthing and Sterling High Schools during community meetings held at each campus.

Both schools are slated to be rebuilt under the 2012 bond program, which was approved by voters in November 2012.

“This is an exciting time for Sterling,” Principal Dale Mitchell told the audience of more than 40 at his campus on Monday.  “It’s very important that you’re here and giving your feedback.” Continue reading

2007 and 2012 Bond Programs Progressing Within Budget and on Schedule

The HISD Board of Education held a workshop on Sept. 19 to receive progress updates on the district’s capital building programs, which are progressing within budget and on schedule.

As the Houston Independent School District moves forward with planning for the 2012 bond program to renovate, build or replace 40 schools, work is underway to finish all the projects in the 2007 bond program by the end of 2014.
