Getting ready for the first day of school? There are a number of events and resources available to ensure children are ready for the new school year:

HISD Homeless Education Office Back-to-School Extravaganza

Free backpacks, school supplies, shoes, health screenings, and immunization for low-income HISD families, not just the homeless. Students must bring their shot records to get free immunizations. The Houston Food Bank will distribute fresh produce to families. Noon to 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Bethel’s Empowerment Center, 12660 Sandpiper Dr., Houston 77035.  Continue reading

Homeless Education Office to host Back-to-School Extravaganza Aug. 21

Classes start on Monday, Aug. 24, but just a few days before that, HISD’s Homeless Education Office will help you get your child ready to go back to school.

The office is hosting a Back-to-School Extravaganza from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, at Bethel’s Place Empowerment Center (12660 Sandpiper, 77035). Continue reading

NCAA donates backpacks to 6,800 HISD students

About 6,800 HISD third-grade students will get free backpacks full of supplies, thanks to the NCAA.

Chase to Distribute Backpacks and School Supplies to Sharpstown High School

Donations valued at more than $30,000 to benefit nearly 1,300 students

Just in time for the start of the new academic year, Chase and its partners have donated $30,000 in school supplies to the students of Sharpstown High School. The presentation to students will be made in the school auditorium at 7504 Bissonnet on Tuesday, August 27 at 8 a.m.

All the freshmen at this Apollo 20 turnaround campus will receive a new backpack full of schools supplies while students from 10th to 12th grade will get a variety of school supplies such as pens, highlighters, spiral notebooks and binders to ensure they are ready for a successful back to school.

HISD Opens School Year with New Campuses, New Programs, Thousands of New Students

Texas’ largest school district will open the 2013-2014 academic year on Monday with two new neighborhood school buildings, two new specialty magnet schools, and thousands of new students.

HISD Superintendent Terry Grier and members of the HISD Board of Education will visit with students, parents, teachers and principals at two campuses to personally welcome them to back to school on Monday, Aug. 26.

Families Required to Complete Application for HISD’s Free and Reduced Price Meals Program

Application available online and at all HISD campuses for 2013-2014 academic year

Families must complete an application for their children to qualify for free-and reduced-price meals and ensure their children start the school year with access to healthy meals.

Families can fill out their application at any HISD campus, at the HISD Food Services Support Facility (6801 Bennington Street), or online at www.mealapps.houstonisd.org.

Parents: Get Children’s Back-to-School Immunizations for Free

The start of the new school year is just around the corner, and one of the things all students need to have is up-to-date immunizations.

Which immunizations are required for your child? Visit the Heath & Medical Services Departments’ website for the lists.

Here’s some good news: Your child can get back-to-school immunizations for free. Here’s where and when you can get them in Houston. Parents must accompany their child and have their child’s immunization records in order to qualify.

HISD Transportation to Provide Emergency/Rescue Training to All Bus Drivers

More than 1,200 to complete hands-on training in partnership with Houston Fire Department

HISD’s Transportation Services, in partnership with the Houston Fire Department, will provide realistic emergency and rescue training to all bus drivers and attendants to prepare them to respond successfully to any crisis on a school bus.  The training will be August 6 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Houston Fire Department Training Facility, 8030 Braniff Street.

Mock emergency drills will prepare bus drivers and attendants to respond to a variety of potential scenarios, including a fire on a school bus, an armed intruder on board, and a wreck involving a train.
