HISD student dancers showcase their skills at Middle School Dance Festival

Middle school students from more than 20 HISD schools gathered at Welch Middle School on Saturday, Oct. 28, for a day devoted entirely their collective passion: dance.

Student dancers were invited to participate in hour-long master workshop classes in hip hop, jazz, contemporary dance, and more, as well as learn how to audition for high school dance companies. The master workshops were led by professional dance choreographers from the Institute of Contemporary Dance. After a day of rigorous learning and practice, 19 dance ensembles had the opportunity to show off their hard work in a performance showcase.

Middle school folklórico troupe brings traditional folk dance to generations of students

Burbank Middle School is nearly a century old, but has never been the kind of institution to stay stuck in the past. Expanding alongside the growing city of Houston, Burbank evolved from a small school in an undeveloped, rural farming area into an inner-city school with a growing student body to match. With all that growth and change, current students at Burbank Middle School probably wouldn’t expect that they’d have much in common with previous generations of Burbank scholars. They certainly wouldn’t guess that they participate in the very same after school dance troupe, under the tutelage of the very same teacher, as Burbank students did nearly 40 years ago.

HISD dance and photography collaboration project on display at MFAH

A first-of-its-kind exhibition created by HISD Fine Arts students is now on display at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). The artwork combines dance with photography to showcase the artistic relationship between the two disciplines.

HISD Fine Arts students unite for unique exhibition supported by local arts organizations

HISD’s Fine Arts Department has combined dance with photography to create a first-of-its-kind exhibition showcasing the artistic relationship between the two disciplines.

Power of Collaboration: Through the Artists’ Lens is on display in the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center lobby through Dec. 2. An opening reception is being held Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6-8 p.m. Artist recognitions will begin at 6:45 p.m.

HISD Students to Promote Early Voting With Zombie Walk and “Thriller” Vote Early Flash Mob

HSPVA and Lamar ‘zombies’ walking to early voting site

 

What:         HISD’s own ‘zombies’ from HSPVA and Lamar High School will be encouraging fellow classmates, staff, parents and the community at-large to vote early and to finish the entire ballot by walking from the West Gray/Montrose intersection to the Metropolitan Multi-Services Center (1475 West Gray) where they will culminate their walk  with a zombie “Thriller” flash mob at 4:30 p.m.
