As thousands of students prepare for prom season and graduation, the Houston Independent School District Police Department is reminding both students and parents play it safe during the festivities.

Art contest winners for Police Appreciation Week announced
The Houston Independent School District Police Department has announced the winners of its first Police Appreciation Week Art Contest.
Third- through fifth-grade students throughout the district showcased their artistic skills on a range of law enforcement themes, including highlighting any HISD campus officer, honoring a relative in law enforcement, or the different types of law enforcement officers.
“It was amazing to see the themes and imaginations of our third-, fourth- and fifth-graders,” said Lt. Guadalupe Jimenez. “Their illustrations showed the time and effort that was contributed by each student.”
HISD Police Department welcomes newest officer during ceremony
The Houston Independent School District Police Department welcomed its newest police officer during a swearing-in ceremony at its headquarters on Monday morning.

HISD PD to host ‘Protect Your Identity’ shredding event
The Houston Independent School District Police Department wants to help district and community members protect their identity by hosting a free document shredding event open to the public on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m.-12 noon.
Personnel from HISD PD and Texas Security Shedding will be on hand during the event at the police department’s headquarters, 3500 Tampa, to shred any document, allowing individuals an opportunity to have their sensitive documents securely destroyed.
Employees of the Month honored for ‘Service Excellence’
Five HISD employees were celebrated as March’s Employee of the month for Service Excellence at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Tuesday morning during a special breakfast.
The event, hosted every month by HISD’s Chief Operating Officer Leo Bobadilla, recognizes district employees who go above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service in a safe, courteous, responsive and efficient manner. Carnegie Vanguard HS Interact Club, HISD PD partner for holiday toy drive
A group of students from Carnegie Vanguard High School’s Interact Club teamed up with the Houston Independent School District Police Department for its annual holiday Toy Drive on Thursday.
For the second year in a row, the club collected boxes and gave from their own personal pockets to create about 30 gift boxes filled with items such as T-shirts, shorts, soap, pencils and other items for boys and girls.
In a written memo to the Interact Club, HISD Chief of Police Robert Mock thanked the student organization for their kindness.
“You have certainly set a fine example of defining your mission through your thoughts and actions,” Mock said. “Not only did your organization donate gifts for less fortunate children, but you went the extra mile of wrapping the presents and labeling the boxes for easy distribution.”
The mission of the Interact Club aims to show students how to overcome obstacles, such as distance and cultural barriers, while learning to embrace other kids like themselves around the world.

The Houston Independent School District Police Department welcomed five new police officers to its family and promoted one of its own to the rank of sergeant on Monday.
Family members, friends and fellow law enforcement officers gathered at HISD police headquarters to celebrate the addition to the nation’s only accredited public school district police department.
Meet the HISD Police Department’s first female Asian officer
It’s been several months since Minhnguyet “Nicky” Tran was sworn in as a police officer for the Houston Independent School District Police Department. Currently working at Chavez High School, the University of Houston graduate made history by becoming HISD PD’s first female Asian police officer. Tran says she remains committed to community policing and in keeping students and district employees safe on a daily basis. She talks about who inspired her to join HISD PD, and some of her experiences since joining the only accredited public school district police department in the nation.

The Houston Independent School District Police Department celebrated its annual National Night Out event on Tuesday with food, music and fun activities. About 150 community members, law enforcement officials, volunteers and businesses gathered at the department’s headquarters to host the event, which aims to strengthen police and community relationships.

The Houston Independent School District Police Department will be hosting its annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in conjunction with the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). The nonprofit organization, which is in its 31st year serving local communities, is dedicated to the development and promotion of organized law enforcement affiliated crime- and drug-prevention programs.
