K9 unit within HISD’s patrol division sniffs out trouble

Sasha spends most of her work day sniffing around HISD schools, searching for anything that doesn’t belong – drugs, weapons or suspects.

HISD Police Department swears in six new officers, promotes two sergeants

PD_promotionFamily, friends and fellow law enforcement personnel gathered at HISD police headquarters on Monday to celebrate the promotion of two sergeants and the swearing-in of six new police officers.

The police department held the ceremony to mark the beginning of a law enforcement career with the district. For some of the new officers, this won’t be their first time serving as a police officer and have had prior careers with HPD, Cypress ISD and Spring ISD.

HISD to swear in new police chief

District’s Assistant Chief Robert Mock to take helm of police department

What: HISD Police will swear in newly appointed Chief Robert Mock to replace outgoing Chief Jimmy Dotson, who is retiring in January. Mock, 52, has served as assistant chief for HISD Police since 2008. He has more than 27 years of experience in law enforcement in the Houston area, and he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. HISD boasts the only accredited public school district police department in the nation. The department responds to more than 81,380 calls per year and covers more than 300 square miles in the Houston area.

HISD Police Chief Dotson to retire in new year; Mock named as new chief

When HISD Police Chief Jimmy Dotson broke the news of his retirement to his department a month ago, he told the officers that after five years, the time had come for him to leave the district.

“We have worked very hard as a department to get to where we are today,” said Dotson, whose last day with the district will be Jan. 31. “But it is time for me to go. Everything is about timing, and the time is just right.”

On Tuesday, Dotson, 66, was excited about the announcement of his successor – HISD Assistant Chief of Police Robert Mock, who will be sworn in as the district’s new police chief on Jan. 6 at a 2 p.m. ceremony at the High School for Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice. Continue reading

Police Officers to Mentor Fifth-Graders at Nine Schools

Additional HISD police officers will be joining METRO and Houston police to continue to serve as mentors to students at nine elementary schools this school year as part of the district’s law-enforcement mentorship program. The program, which was launched in 2012, focuses on students at the middle-school level. The year, officers will mentor fifth-graders who are identified as “at-risk” because of an incarcerated parent, involvement in gang activity, or chronic attendance issues.

HISD boasts only CALEA accredited public school district police department in the nation

The Houston Independent School District Police Department has again been awarded the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation. HISD boasts the only accredited public school district police department in the nation.

The accreditation, which was first achieved in 2006 and has now been renewed for a second time, was accomplished through a highly regarded and broadly recognized body of professional standards and a review conducted by independent assessors and CALEA’s commissioners.

School districts, law enforcement join Ministers Against Crime for ‘Project Safe Start’

As students across the city enter their final days of the school year, they might see an increased community and law enforcement presence walking the halls.

For more than two decades, Project Safe Start has brought together local religious leaders, school district and area law enforcement, and school officials from districts throughout the area to help prevent crime and increase safety in an effort to get students’ summer vacation off on the right foot.
