Architects from the global design and planning firm Gensler spoke to a crowd of about 40 at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts on Thursday to discuss their vision for the new campus, which is being built under the $1.89 billion 2012 bond program that will replace or rebuild 40 schools across Houston.
HSPVA Selected For Jazz ‘Peer-to-Peer Education’ Tour
The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) is among two schools in the nation selected by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to participate in a national “Peer-to-Peer Education” tour.

HSPVA designated Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network
The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts has been designated a 2013-2015 Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network, the nation’s largest professional membership organization of specialized art schools.
The designation signifies that HSPVA has successfully completed a self-evaluation in the areas of strengths, areas for improvement, consistency with school-wide or program purpose, aspirations, and future challenges.
Board of Education Approves 11 More Contracts for Work Related to 2012 Bond
Selected projects include five more schools and athletic facility upgrades
May 9, 2013 – The HISD Board of Education authorized the district to negotiate design contracts with six firms on selected 2012 bond projects, including two of the district’s renowned specialty high schools – DeBakey High School for the Health Professions and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
HSPVA Alumnus Robert Glasper Wins Grammy Award

Robert Glasper, an alumnus of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, took home the award for Best R&B Album earlier this month at the 55th Grammy Awards.
Glasper, who turns 35 in April, won for his latest album, “Black Radio.” The album blends jazz, R&B, funk and hip-hop and features appearances by Lupe Fiasco, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and others.

HISD Students Named Among Semifinalists for National Achievement Scholarship
Thirteen African-American seniors from four HISD high schools are among the semifinalists for the National Achievement Scholarships. These students will have the opportunity to compete for 800 scholarships worth more than $2.5 million that will be offered next spring.
The National Achievement Scholarship program is a privately financed academic competition that was started in 1964 to recognize and offer scholarships to academically promising African-American students throughout the nation.
To be considered for this scholarship, more than 160,000 high school juniors took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, about 1,600 students, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
“We are very proud of these students and their academic achievements,” said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier. “To be recognized among the nation’s best students by the National Achievement Scholarship program is truly an honor and a testament to their hard work.”
The selected semifinalist students are from the following HISD schools: Bellaire High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and Westside High School. The 2013 National Achievement Winners will be announced starting in April 2013.

HISD Students among Semifinalists for National Merit Scholarship
Fifty-six seniors from six different HISD high schools are among the semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship program. These students will have the opportunity to compete for more than 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.
“The National Merit Scholarship Program has a long tradition of excellence,” said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier. “We are extremely proud of these students being recognized nationally for their academic achievements. Their accomplishments are a testament to their dedication and hard work.”
To be considered for this scholarship program, about 1.5 million high school juniors took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, about 16,000 students, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

2012 Bond Proposal Calls for New DeBakey High School in the Heart of the Texas Medical Center
The 2012 bond proposal includes $64.5 million to rebuild DeBakey High School for Health Professions. The new campus would be located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center and would provide students with expanded access to health care and research facilities. DeBakey is one several HISD magnet and specialty schools that would be rebuilt under the 2012 Bond proposal.

A new campus is also planned for the nationally renowned High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. It would be built downtown near Houston’s vaunted Theater District on land that HISD already owns at 1300 Capitol.
HSPVA would get a new campus under the 2012 bond.
In all, the 2012 bond proposal includes funding to rebuild or renovate 38 schools, upgrade technology in all HISD classrooms, and make other districtwide improvements. The Board of Education is set to vote on the 2012 bond proposal on August 9. If an election is called and the measure is approved by voters in November, the design phase of the bond project could begin in early 2013 and construction of new schools would likely start in 2014.
