Spelling bee champions invited to Texas State Capitol

The 2015 winners of the African American National Spelling Bee Championships visited the Texas State Capitol on May 12, 2015, to be honored for their accomplishments. Two of the three champion spellers were HISD students.

Flooding spurs HISD community members to take action

Educators at two HISD elementary schools have stepped up to handle the effects of the recent flooding, each in their own way.

On May 26, Steven Shannon, a music teacher at Lyons Elementary School, saved a woman from drowning.

Shannon was on a walk when he noticed that Glenda Reynolds was trapped in her car by the rising water in the underpass beneath Shepherd Drive. Shannon and three other Good Samaritans swam out and extricated Reynolds and her dog from the vehicle. Continue reading

Wilkins Pavilion parking tips for upcoming graduation ceremonies

Students from Kashmere, North Forest, Booker T. Washington and Wheatley high schools will hold graduation ceremonies this weekend at Mark Anthony Wilkins Pavilion, located next to Forest Brook Middle School at 7525 Tidwell Road.

In order to facilitate a smooth graduation day, HISD officers will help direct traffic and parking. The officers will be there ensure the safety of all graduates and their families.

Seven HISD students win National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarships

Seven Houston Independent School District students from four schools are among more than 2,200 high school seniors from across the country to be selected this week to win National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.

The students — from Carnegie Vanguard, Challenge Early College, and Lamar high schools, as well as DeBakey High School for Health Professions — received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships from the University of Houston, University of Oklahoma, University of Tulsa, and Texas A&M University.  Continue reading

Get a jump on summer reading with these great online resources

SummerReading_2015_400Before the days of Kindle and the Internet, children who wanted books to read over the summer had to either persuade their parents to purchase titles at a bookstore or visit their local libraries.

Now, students can still while away an afternoon in the cool quiet of a public library, but the days of being limited to hard copies are long gone. This year, HISD students can get a jump on their summer reading by taking advantage of two great online resources: myON and Istation. Continue reading

A new school has at last earned an old tradition. On May 27, the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men celebrated its first graduating class. The ceremony was held at Kingdom Builders Center and 18 seniors received their diplomas.

PowerUp HUB receives Learning Impact Award

HISD’s pilot implementation of the HUB, the district’s online teaching and learning platform, has received a 2015 Learning Impact Award from IMS Global Learning Consortium, the world leader in EdTech interoperability and impact. The district was one of eight winners selected from K–12 school districts, colleges and universities, and education technology corporations from around the world.

Students celebrate excellent attendance and more at superhero bash

Lee High School hosted their fifth annual Perfect Attendance Outstanding Student Bash on May 21, 2015. More than 250 students were honored for attendance, academic improvement, and making the honor roll. Each student received an award certificate to commemorate his or her accomplishment.
