Rice Empower Helping More Minority Students Envision Careers in STEM Fields

About 150 students from four HISD campuses, including North Houston Early College, Sharpstown, and Wheatley high schools, got a glimpse into both college life and the careers that may await them after completing it when they took part in Rice University’s Empower STEM Expo earlier this month.

Chavez High School Students Build Race Car to Compete in The Texas Mile

NASCAR Driver Donnie Neuenberger will drive the car in the competition

What: For the past six weeks, a group of students from Chavez High School have been engineering a race car that will be driven by NASCAR driver Donnie Neuenberger in The Texas Mile competition in Goliad County on March 22 – 24.  Chavez Motor Sports Engineering is unlike any other pro team in racing in that the crew chief, car chief, and team specialists are all students. The team is lead by science and engineering teacher and professional racer Greg Ditch.  The students have been working in the school’s engineering lab after school and on Saturdays to transform a stock 2006 Pontiac GTO into a 700 horsepower land speed race car.  Through the process of engineering an actual competitive car, the students in the program have learned how math and science apply to the world of high performance motor sports.

It’s decision time for students: magnet admission status letters go out March 22

 

Lovett Elementary

Lovett Elementary is in the top three of elementary magnet schools with applications received.

Starting March 25, parents will have two weeks to let schools know where they want to send their children this fall.

Letters notifying parents of their children’s magnet application status will be mailed out starting Friday, March 22, and students who are “accepted” must indicate that they will attend their school of choice during the 2013–2014 school year by signing and returning the enclosed Student Entrance Agreement no later than Friday, April 5 (postmarked). In an effort to showcase some of  HISD’s outstanding high school students, KHOU Channel 11 has launched a new weekly segment called  Our Future, which airs every Thursday during the station’s 5 p.m. newscast.  The purpose of the segment is to identify and profile young student leaders who can serve as an inspiration and role models for others. Educators from three HISD campuses have been named finalists in the 2013 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program, spotlighting them as some of the best educators in Texas.

Eighth Annual Parent Conference and Resource Fair this Saturday

HISD’s eighth annual Parent Conference and Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, March 2, at Pin Oak Middle School (4601 Glenmont, 77401), from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The event is hosted by the HISD Special Education Department and Family to Family Network.

Conference highlights include multiple breakout sessions on a wide variety of topics (such as Sibling Support, Apps for Disabilities, and Inappropriate Behavior) and separate sessions for high school students/young adults with disabilities.

Nearly 10,000 HISD Juniors to Participate in Free SAT School Day

District to offer free SAT exam to all juniors during class on Wednesday

For the third consecutive year, the Houston Independent School District will be offering the SAT free of charge to all juniors during class on Wednesday, February 27 in an effort to eliminate barriers, such as work obligations or transportation limitations, which have historically excluded some students from taking this important step toward college readiness.
