Autism Awareness Month begins; HISD Wears Blue to Mark ‘Light It Up Blue’ Day

April is Autism Awareness Month, and in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, communities across the globe are being asked to “Light It Up Blue” on April 2.

Staffers around HISD wore blue shirts, shoes and other items to signify “Light It Up Blue” day.

Only about 1,375 students have been identified with autism spectrum disorders in HISD (a figure that represents less than one percent of the district’s entire student population), but Autism Support Team Coordinator Lorraine Klim-Drew says that because more are being diagnosed every day, it’s still important to increase awareness on this subject.

Students and Parents Invited to College and Career Night

Clifton Middle School’s annual event to help families see connection between school and careers

Students of all ages from all HISD schools are invited to attend Clifton Middle School’s annual College and Career Night on Tuesday, March 19, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This is the seventh year for the event, which will feature representatives from 18 colleges, and all 16 Texas career clusters. New Parent Book Club Strengthens Parent-Child Relationship and Promotes Literacy

HISD's Parent Engagement department says the reaction to the Parent Book Club has been so popular, they're looking at expanding the program to other schools.

In an effort to promote the importance of parental involvement and literacy simultaneously, the HISD Parent Engagement Department has launched a new Parent Book Club.

Nearly 30 parents attended the club’s first meeting on March 1 at Roosevelt Elementary eager to discuss the first chapters of the book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk and participate in the group exercises. Continue reading

It’s decision time for students: magnet admission status letters go out March 22

Lovett Elementary is in the top three of elementary magnet schools with applications received.

Starting March 25, parents will have two weeks to let schools know where they want to send their children this fall.

Letters notifying parents of their children’s magnet application status will be mailed out starting Friday, March 22, and students who are “accepted” must indicate that they will attend their school of choice during the 2013–2014 school year by signing and returning the enclosed Student Entrance Agreement no later than Friday, April 5 (postmarked). Team HISD is Hiring – Early Application Deadline is March 18

HISD currently has openings for motivated teachers who are invested in making an impact on student achievement.  To attract the best candidates, we are currently accepting early applications for the 2013-2014 school year. The deadline for the early application round is March 18, 2013. We are continuing to access applications for the 2012-2013 school year.

While vacancies exist in all areas, the highest need for teachers exists in critical shortage areas including bilingual (Spanish), secondary Spanish, secondary math, secondary science and specific areas in special education.

Eighth Annual Parent Conference and Resource Fair this Saturday

HISD’s eighth annual Parent Conference and Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, March 2, at Pin Oak Middle School (4601 Glenmont, 77401), from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The event is hosted by the HISD Special Education Department and Family to Family Network.

Conference highlights include multiple breakout sessions on a wide variety of topics (such as Sibling Support, Apps for Disabilities, and Inappropriate Behavior) and separate sessions for high school students/young adults with disabilities.

United Way of Greater Houston Partners with Bruce Elementary School

First-grade students at Bruce Elementary School are getting new help achieving their reading goals.   The United Way of Greater Houston is partnering with the school in a new literacy mentor program.

The program will pair a volunteer and a first-grade student together for the entire year.  During that time, the volunteers will read a book with the students and will later help them complete a literacy exercise. 

United Way President and CEO Anna Babin presented books to all of the first grade students along with a $5,000 check to principal Trealla Epps.  Both Babin and Epps said they believe the initiative will encourage the volunteers to develop positive relationships through mentoring and literacy.

Benbrook Elementary School Elves and More Donations
