Construction of new Austin HS to reach milestone on Monday

An immense construction crane will lift the first wall of the new Austin High School into place on Monday, marking a significant development for the 2012 Bond project.

The news was announced to the school’s Project Advisory Team on Wednesday during its regular meeting, which also included general construction and budget updates.

The $80.9 million project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2020, will feature modern classrooms and flexible learning spaces while also preserving the historic front facade of the original main building, which opened in 1937.

“Tours of the construction site for small groups of students would really build excitement about the progress we’re making,” HISD Construction Services Senior Manager Meredith Smith said. Continue reading →

Austin High School students, staff, alumni, and community members gathered Tuesday to show their appreciation for the 81-year-old campus and celebrate the start of construction on their new school.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held just beyond the site where the current school is undergoing demolition and adjacent to where construction crews have started work on the foundation for the new school.

Austin HS students move into temporary facility while new campus is constructed

Austin High School students and staff began the spring semester on Monday in a temporary campus in preparation for the start of construction on their new building.

The new Temporary Learning Center — dubbed by school officials as the “TLC” and made up of temporary buildings — was built to ensure student and staff safety during construction. It is located along South Lockwood Drive, directly behind the existing school building.

Located in Houston’s East End, the 80-year-old comprehensive high school is being rebuilt as part of the Houston Independent School District’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program. Plans for the $79.6 million project call for a new facility that preserves the original building’s architecturally significant building structure and can accommodate up to 2,000 students. Students in Houston’s East End gathered at Austin High School on Thursday to receive new shoes in time for the holidays, thanks to the Navigation Area Business Association’s annual Shoes for Kids donation.

For the 30th year, NABA donated more than 2,500 pairs of shoes to students from 10 HISD elementary schools: Burnet, Carillo, DeZavala, Franklin, Gallegos, J.R. Harris, J.P. Henderson, Lantrip, Page, and Tijerina. Continue reading →

Austin HS hosts community meeting to discuss temporary campus move

Students, faculty, and community members gathered Tuesday in the Austin High School auditorium to learn about the construction plan for their new facility, as well as the logistics of their relocation to a temporary campus.

Austin High School is being re-built as part of HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program. The $79.6 million project calls for a new facility that accommodates 1,800 to 2,000 students and preserves the architecturally significant structure of the current building.

To accommodate construction and ensure safety, students and staff will relocate to a temporary campus — made up of 15 temporary buildings offering all of the school’s current academic and athletic programs — along S. Lockwood Drive. Students will report to the temporary campus, which is directly behind the current school, when they return from winter break on Jan. 8.

Students attend forums to learn about post-high school options

University of Houston-Downtown President Juan Munoz on Thursday visited with upperclassmen at Austin High School and Eastwood Academy, discussing the limitless opportunities of higher education – and bringing some exciting news to a few seniors.

Located less than five miles from UHD and only a six-minute walk between the two high school campuses, both Eastwood Academy and Austin High School are represented by HISD District VIII Board of Trustee Diana Davila, who joined Munoz on the college-readiness tour.

“It’s important for HISD to have forums like today that introduce another college option and allows for our students to interact with the decision-makers of a university,” Davila said. “Hopefully today, the students realize that there are people who care and are working hard to provide resources they need as they continue their education beyond high school.”  Continue reading →

Austin HS moving to temporary campus in January

Austin High School students and staff will relocate in January to a temporary campus in preparation for the start of construction on their new building.

Construction of the Temporary Learning Center — dubbed by school officials as the “TLC” and made up of temporary buildings — is nearing completion, with plans for students and staff to report to that location on Jan. 8, which is the first day of the spring semester.

The temporary campus was built to ensure student and staff safety during construction. It is located along South Lockwood Drive, directly behind the existing school building.

“It’s becoming a reality. The move is starting to set in,” Austin High School Principal Steve Guerrero said during a recent Project Advisory Team meeting. “It’s still a move, but we’re working to make sure the transition will be as smooth as possible.”

Community, staff invited to cheer on bands at 10th annual Marching Band Festival 

The impact of Hurricane Harvey will be felt at this year’s Marching Band Festival, which is from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at Delmar Stadium (2020 Mangum). Admission is free.

The 10th annual showcase will feature fewer bands after Harvey shortened practice time and left some schools with damaged instruments.

Community and staff are invited to cheer on the nine participating bands as they perform in front of UIL-level adjudicators who will provide feedback on music, visual effects and performance. The lineup is:

  • Washington HS: 5 p.m.
  • North Forest HS: 5:30 p.m.
  • Sharpstown HS: 6 p.m.
  • Scarborough HS: 6:30 p.m.
  • Heights HS: 7 p.m.
  • Austin HS: 7:30 p.m.
  • Sterling HS: 8 p.m.
  • Lamar HS: 8:30 p.m.
  • Waltrip HS: 9 p.m.

A temporary campus will begin to take shape this summer just across the street from Austin High School as crews begin installing modular buildings to accommodate students during construction of their new school.

The temporary campus will be located along South Lockwood Drive, directly behind the current school. Students will have access to the same programming, activities, clubs, and sports that are currently being offered. Continue reading →

Austin HS marching band receives Certificate of Congressional Recognition

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Austin High School marching band were presented with with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition Jan. 15 during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Battle of the Bands at at Thorne Stadium.  The marching band has participated in various MLK activities since the band’s creation in 2005, including the battle of the bands every year.  The band nicknamed “Sonic Boom” has led the MLK Youth Parade since 2008, along with several other parades including Houston Veteran’s Day Parade, Houston Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights Parade in Louisiana. The students also have participated in the Cinco de Mayo Parade, Fiesta Patrias downtown, Fiesta Flambeau in San Antonio, and Mardi Gras in both Galveston and New Orleans. The band is led by music director Keavon Runnels, who pushes the group to not only represent diverse cultures but also to experience cultures first hand.
