Workshops Guide Designs for New HSPVA and DeBakey Campuses

Architects go over design ideas for the new DeBakey High School for Health Professions during a design charrette.

Houston ISD will be rebuilding two of its specialty high schools into 21st century campuses that cultivate creativity and collaboration when construction gets underway on the new DeBakey High School for Health Professions and the new High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

That consensus came as each school held a two-day design charrette with their Project Advisory Teams and architects to discuss specific goals and aspirations for the new campuses.

“Students are more open and receptive to learning if they can access it visually,” said architect Greg Papay, who is part of the architect team designing the new DeBakey. “We’re designing a 21st century school where learning will happen in a variety of spaces.”

Eight HISD Students Named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists

Eight seniors from seven high schools throughout the Houston Independent School District have qualified as semifinalists in the prestigious National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately funded academic competition created in 1964 to recognize and provide scholarships to academically promising African-American students across the country. It is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and works in concert with the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sixty HISD Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Sixty seniors from six high schools throughout the Houston Independent School District have qualified as semifinalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. HISD had 56 semifinalists last year.

The students are among 16,000 from across the country to earn the semifinalist designation, allowing them the opportunity to continue in the academic competition and vie for more than 8,000 college scholarships worth roughly $35 million.

Ten HISD Seniors Awarded National Merit Scholarships

Winners selected from talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists

Ten Houston Independent School District students from five high schools have been named National Merit Scholarship winners and will each receive a scholarship for their undergraduate studies.  The winners, selected from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists nationwide, were awarded based on their ability to demonstrate the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential success in rigorous college studies.

April 10, 2013 – Seven Houston Independent School District students have been named National Achievement Scholarship winners and will each receive a $2,500 scholarship for their undergraduate studies.

Each year the National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards scholarships to African-American students who have excelled in academics and have demonstrated the potential for academic success in college.

Community Input Sought on Relocation of DeBakey High School for Health Professions

Meeting will focus on schedule, site needs,construction process for 2012 bond project

What:             Community meeting to discuss the upcoming project to relocate DeBakey High School for Health Professions. As part of the 2012 Bond Program, voters authorized HISD to relocate the school to a site designed to better meet the academic needs of students. The meeting will discuss project schedule and site considerations, as well as planning, design and construction requirements.

HISD’s DeBakey High School is a Finalist for Title I National Distinguished Schools Award

DeBakey High School for Health Professions is one of only two Texas schools that are finalists for the Title I National Distinguished Schools award.  The award recognizes schools that have consistently demonstrated strong academic performance over a three-year period and have also achieved the “academically exemplary” rating for the present year.   The schools must also have a population of 40 percent or more low-income students.

DeBakey was recognized for its successful curriculum and instruction and for providing opportunities for all students to succeed. All of its graduates are accepted into colleges or universities, and in 2012 DeBakey students received more than $30.8 million dollars in scholarship offers.  The school was also acknowledged for its continuing professional development for teachers and administrators and its partnerships with parents, families, and members of the community.  

“We are excited DeBakey High School for Health Professions is receiving national recognition for its effective approach to learning,” said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier. “We’re proud of the hard work our students, administrators, and staff have shown in making DeBakey one of the best schools in the nation.”

DeBakey is also the 2012 No. 1 high-school in the eight-county Houston region, according to Children at Risk.  DeBakey received National Title I Distinguished school recognition during the 2006-2007 school year. This year’s winner will be announced in January.

HISD High Schools Win More National Accolades

Houston ISD high schools are well represented on two national lists issued today that seek to identify the top high schools in America.

The strong showing on the Washington Post High School Challenge rankings and Newsweek’s America’s Best High Schools of 2012 are the result of HISD’s Advanced Placement initiative that began with the 2009-2010 school year.  That was the year Superintendent Terry Grier called on all high schools to expand student access to college-level AP courses and the district agreed to pay the exam fees for all students in those classes.

“This is great recognition of the hard work being done by teachers and students at high schools across the Houston Independent School District,” said Superintendent Terry Grier.

Today, all HISD high schools offer a minimum of 10-15 AP classes, and the number of exams earning a score of 3 or higher, which is the score most colleges require for course credit, is up 35 percent.

HISD’s strong AP progress is one reason the district is among four finalists for the Broad Prize for Urban Education, which recognizes the top urban school district in America. This week, a Broad Prize panel of experts is touring HISD schools as part of the evaluation process.

Washington Post High School Challenge

Twenty-one HISD high schools earned recognition in the Washington Post High School Challenge, a list of 1,800 schools representing the top 9 percent in the nation when it comes to preparing graduates for college. Only 125 Texas high schools made the list, and HISD campuses – Carnegie Vanguard, Eastwood Academy, and DeBakey High School for Health Professions – represent three of the national top 100.
