Six new HISD schools open to students for the first time

The first day of school is always exciting, but the energy on Monday was palpable at six new HISD schools opening their doors to students for the first time.

The new schools — Mark White and Condit elementary schools, North Houston and South early college high schools, Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, and Fonwood Early Childhood Center — were rebuilt as modern learning environments with flexible classrooms, increased access to technology, bursts of color, and lots of natural light.

Also formally opening to students on Monday was the modern, new classroom wing at Worthing High School and several renovated spaces at Waltrip High School. Continue reading →

North Houston Early College High School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday to celebrate the opening of their new building, located on the Houston Community College Northeast campus.

“We’re extremely proud of our beautiful, new, state-of-the-art facility,” NHECHS Principal Angela Lundy-Jackson said. “It took so much to get to this point, and I’m so appreciative to everyone who worked tirelessly to make our vision a reality.”

Having spent six years in a temporary campus, Principal Angela Lundy-Jackson couldn’t stop smiling as she showed off the new North Houston Early College High School, one of 40 schools being rebuilt or renovated under HISD’s 2012 bond program.

“Everyone is just giddy,” she said. “It’s been a tremendous learning process but now I see the reward.”

Construction at North Houston Early and South Early College high schools nears completion

Construction at both North Houston Early and South Early college high schools is nearing completion, with preparations underway to have both campuses ready for students at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

New building for North Houston Early College HS to be ready for 2016-17 school year

Construction on the new North Houston Early College High School is well underway with its structure currently in place, and roofing and exterior framing on the building is ongoing. The school will receive a new building to accommodate 400 students located at the Houston Community College (HCC) Northline Campus.

The 59,000-square-foot facility will feature modern science labs, flexible learning spaces and a college resource center to provide students with college scholarship and registration information as well as access to counselors.

Construction will be completed in the second quarter of 2016, and be ready for students for the 2016-2017 school year.

Construction crews work on the new North Houston Early College High School.

HISD’s North Houston Early College High School (NHECHS) reached a major milestone last week in the construction of its new building, as work crews began erecting steel columns and beams, taking the project into the vertical phase of construction.

Renovations, construction underway at HISD high schools

A recent swimming pool renovation at Waltrip High School features lane ropes, starting blocks and a new timer system, making the pool competition ready.

The work is the latest visible milestone for the Oak Forest high school, which is moving forward on commitments made in both the 2007 and 2012 bond programs. In the southern part of the city, work is also getting underway on a new building addition at Worthing High School.

North Houston Early College HS community hears update on plans for new school

North Houston Early College High School is ready to leave behind its portables for a three-story building with a university feel.

“We need a school because we really don’t have one,” said Principal Angela Lundy-Jackson during a community meeting Tuesday night at the school. The school uses portables for its classrooms, cafeterias and administrative offices. “So we’re excited to see this project come to fruition. Moving these kids into the future is very much needed.”

HISD Breaking Ground on First New Schools of 2012 Bond Program

An excavator began doing site work this week for the new South Early College High School, marking the first new school to break ground within the 2012 bond program, which will build or renovate 40 schools across the city.

“We are very excited about this milestone,” said Superintendent Terry Grier. “With construction underway, we are one step closer to our goal of providing our students with 21st century schools that will prepare them for college and careers.”
