Young Audiences honors HISD high schools with arts awards

Young Audiences of Houston’s celebrated their 59th year of providing arts education to the Houston area at their annual gala on May 7, where they presented Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy (YWCPA) and Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men (MLCPA) with 2015 Arts Empowerment Awards.

Sam Houston student attains three IT industry certifications

Luis Guapo, a senior at Sam Houston Math, Science & Technology Center, recently passed the CompTIA Network+ test over the weekend, giving him a total of three industry certifications – Information Technology Fundamentals, A+, and Network+.

“This a great accomplishment for Guapo and the IT program at Sam Houston,” said one of his technology teachers, Eduardo Cantu. “Luis’ accomplishments exemplify what the IT program is about – passion for IT, commitment to learning, and a professional attitude.”

In addition to obtaining these industry certifications, Guapo took first place in February in the Skills USA District 8 computer maintenance competition and went on to compete at the state level.

Guapo is in the top ten percent of his senior class and has been accepted at the University of Texas.

Middle school students win Target shopping spree

The Moran Norris Foundation is treating 150 students from six HISD middle schools to a shopping spree on Friday, May 8, 2015, at Target South Central, 6500 South Main, 77025.

In the “Shopping for Good Character” program, students from Cullen, Dowling, McReynolds, Marshall, and M.C. Williams middle schools, as well as Woodson Leadership Academy, were selected by their teachers for excellent attendance, great character, and the ability to make good choices. Each student receives $100 to purchase items for themselves and family members. They are also treated to lunch, courtesy of the foundation.

Every year, HISD elementary and middle school students participate in the Dental Health Poster Contest, which promotes the American Dental Association’s National Children’s Dental Health Month campaign. The purpose is to convince children and adults of the importance of good oral health.

Congratulations to Sanchez Elementary’s ballet folklorico dancers, who took first place in the Pre-Junior Elementary and Duet categories at the ACADEZ dance competition on April 18, 2015, in San Antonio. They competed against schools from across the country.

ACADEZ is an acronym for the Academia de la Danza Amalia Hernández. Hernández (1917-2000) was a Mexican ballet choreographer and founder of the renowned Ballet Folklorica de Mexico in 1952.

College readiness event prepares high schoolers for college

If you are a high school senior or junior looking forward to college, don’t miss “Surviving the Yard,” a one-day college readiness event designed to help prepare high school students for their first semester at college. This is the 14th annual installment of the Young Professionals University, which is hosted by Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals.

HSPVA’s ‘Sound of Music’ nominated for six Tommy Tune Awards

Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) announced the nominees for the 13th annual Tommy Tune Awards, and HISD’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) received six nominations for their production of “The Sound of Music.”
