HISD School Board Approves District of Innovation Plan

Houston Independent School District will become a District of Innovation (DOI) after the School Board approved the DOI designation Thursday night. The vote was 8 in favor, 0 opposed. HISD has been one of the only school systems in the state without DOI status. Systems with the designation are exempt from certain statutory requirements and have greater flexibility in the way they conduct district operations to support students. HISD’s DOI Committee developed its plan as part of a broader effort to ensure every student has a high-quality education and graduates prepared for the modern workplace and world.

Literacy program donates millionth book to HISD students

Research shows that children who have books at home are more likely to be successful in school and maintain grade-level reading comprehension. However, according to the National Literacy Trust, one in five children do not own any books of their own. This fact was the impetus for the creation of My Home Library, an initiative of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Literacy that strives to give children from low-income families tools to read at home and thrive in the classroom.

HISD second graders gifted bicycles through Wish for Wheels

In 2022, Dogan Elementary School’s first graders watched covetously as their second-grade schoolmates were gifted bicycles courtesy of HISD’s partnership with Oxy and Wish for Wheels. They never would have dreamed that in a year’s time, they would be the recipients of bikes of their own, just in time for the holidays.

HISD hosting bus driver hiring event Wednesday, Dec. 13

Houston Independent School District is hiring bus drivers for the 2023-2024 school year. In collaboration with Human Resources, the Transportation Services Department will host a Bus Driver Hiring Event on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Northwest Motor Pool complex (6351 Pinemont Drive, 77092).

HISD 2024-2025 School Choice application now open; See timeline and dates

HISD’s Department of School Choice has announced key dates for families interested in participating in the school choice process and enrolling their scholars in magnet or alternative schools.

The process has been updated based on feedback that the District received from families with the intention of simplifying and streamlining the school choice process. HISD will condense the application and enrollment timeline in order to notify families about their options earlier.

Each year, student artists throughout HISD participate in a one-of-a-kind competition that showcases their creativity and ingratiates them in Houston’s vibrant and historical art scene. The Orange Show Art Car Festival and Parade is an annual event wherein artists work to create the most visionary and inventive decorated cars.

The Pre-K Parent Palooza is an exciting event for pre-K parents and caregivers to meet experts in the early childhood field and receive social and emotional board books, make and take activities, and a Pre-K Parent Guide with quick at-home ideas to enhance their child’s socio-emotional, math, and literacy skills.
