Futures Academy week gives students unique field experiences

During Futures Academy week, students from seven HISD high schools took an inside look at the industries they hope to enter one day. Students who have been taking courses in Logistics & Global Supply, Engineering Technology, Process Technology, and Health Science saw how those studies can be valuable in the work place this week, giving depth and relevance to their rigorous education.

Kashmere High School students from the Process Technology program visited employees at Shell Deer Park who provided an in-depth look at oil refining and chemical manufacturing. Students heard from experts in the industry with decades of experience and valuable advice.

“You have a chance to do something special with your futures in the Futures Academy,” said Shell Learning Advisor David Sparks. “As you continue to grow and enter the field, you will continue to use teamwork more and more.”

Board of Education votes to repurpose Jones and move Dodson

Jones to become specialized Futures Academy; Dodson students will move to Blackshear, Lantrip, and the Rusk School

The HISD Board of Education on Thursday voted 6 to 3 to repurpose Jones High School into a specialized Futures Academy with trustees Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Anna Eastman, and Paula Harris opposed. Trustees also voted 5 to 4 to close Dodson Elementary. Anna Eastman, Rhonda Skillern-Jones, Wanda Adams and Paula Harris were in opposition. These votes come after weeks of debate and conversation including nearly 75 comments from concerned citizens during the board’s meeting and the removal of three schools from the original closure and consolidation proposal.

Long Academy pharmacy technology students get white coats

Jane Long Academy held a white coat ceremony Friday for its pharmacy students.

The ceremony was held to induct ninth-graders into the School of Pharmacy Technology, which is part of the HISD’s Futures Academy, and to celebrate the achievements tenth-graders have made over the past year.

When I Grow Up Expo brings industry experts and day of friendly competition to HISD

A SWAT truck, underwater robotics, construction materials, and sample rotating drill bits. Visitors saw that and more when attending the second annual When I Grow Up Expo. The hands-on, Career and Technical Education event held March 8 hosted more than 60 Houston-based companies from a variety of industries.

Energy, engineering, construction, cosmetology, retail and other high-growth businesses spent Saturday demonstrating how their industries operate and why theirs holds promise for future HISD graduates.

When I Grow Up expo to offer hands-on experiences, contests and much more

The HISD Career and Technical Education Department will host its second annual When I Grow Up expo from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 8 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St.

The free family event will feature hands-on experiences from more than 60 Houston employers in the energy, engineering, retail, cosmetology, college, financial, and automotive industries, as well as performances, competitions, food trucks and more.

“The goal of the event is to expose students to the wide variety of careers in our region that they may not typically think or know about,” said Mike Webster, director of Career and Technical Education for HISD.

HISD Asian-American College & Career Day scheduled for Nov. 16

What: HISD Asian-American College & Career Day, hosted by the HISD Asian Advisory Committee. Asian-American middle and high school students will hear about career options from prominent, successful Asian-American business representatives and learn what they should be doing to prepare for college. They’ll also learn how to navigate the scholarship and financial aid application process. Middle school students also will get tips on making the transition to high school. Parent sessions about the college preparation process will be offered in English, Mandarin and Vietnamese. Registration is encouraged: www.houstonisd.org/asiancareer.

Who: State Rep. Gene Wu will serve as the keynote speaker. Various other prominent, successful, Asian-American business representatives — including FBI Special Agent Gigi Joyner, US Secret Service Special Agent Kim Smith and KHOU News Anchor and Reporter Lily Jang — will speak.

When: Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, 8 a.m. to noon. Registration and Career Fair begin at 8 a.m. followed by an opening session at 9 a.m. Individual workshop sessions for students and parents begin at 9:30 a.m.

Car Show Proceeds to Benefit Chavez Motor Sports Program

Chavez High School is hosting a community car show to give students more opportunities in its motor sports engineering program.

The show will be held in the school’s teacher parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 28. Judging will be held at 1 p.m. The community is invited to enter their cars, imports, trucks and motorcycles for $25.

HISD Announces New Health Science Futures Academy at Westside High School

Provides students chance to earn an associate’s degree and technical training

The Houston Independent School District, in partnership with the Houston Community College and the University of Texas MD Anderson School of Health Professions, announces a new Futures Academy of Heath Science Careers at Westside High School.  Press conference will be on Tuesday, July 30 at 10 a.m. at Westside, 14201 Briar Forest Drive.
