Two schools in the Houston Independent School District’s 2012 Bond Program received national recognition this month in Learning by Design magazine’s 2017 Awards of Excellence.

Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, which opened in August 2016, and Sterling Aviation High School, which opened in January 2017, were among just 17 schools and university facilities from across the country to receive the top designations from the magazine.

“It’s a great day to be a Milby Buffalo!” exclaimed HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza as hundreds of attendees cheered with pride and excitement at Milby High School’s highly anticipated grand opening celebration Thursday.

Current and former Milby Buffs filled the new school as the Milby Marching Thunder Band and Charlie’s Angels pumped up the crowd at HISD’s largest ribbon-cutting ceremony to date. Shiny gold and blue decorations adorned the large learning commons area, which showcases a combination of new construction alongside the historical front façade of the school.

Hundreds attend dedication for new DeBakey HS for Health Professions

More than 300 students, teachers, parents, and medical center community members converged on the Texas Medical Center on Thursday to celebrate the dedication of the new DeBakey High School for Health Professions.

Columns of blue and white balloons flanked center stage and music from the DeBakey orchestra filled the five-story atrium as attendees took their seats, eager to celebrate the school’s opening and tour the new facility.

“This year we will be celebrating 45 years,” DeBakey Principal Agnes Perry said. “DeBakey High School for Health Professions has successfully introduced and honed an innovative magnet school model.”

Each spring, HISD students produce short educational videos about technology safety for the Spring 2017 Digital Literacy Moments Video Campaign. The videos are judged by the Future of Privacy Forum, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group that focuses on issues of data privacy, and HISD’s Educational Technology team. The nine winning videos are published on the HISD website.

The goal of the campaign is to prepare students to be global graduates by teaching them basic 21st century skills: learning to use technology safely, knowing how data is handled by apps, and adhering to intellectual property and copyright laws. Learning these skills helps to make them responsible and effective technology users in school and in their chosen careers.    Continue reading →

Neither gray skies nor threat of rain kept enthusiastic community members away from Barbara Jordan High School for Careers’ groundbreaking celebration on Tuesday, as more than 100 stakeholders turned out to mark the start of construction on a new $36.6 million facility.

“We’re celebrating an important milestone today,” said Jordan Principal Ross McAlpine. “We’ve spent a couple of years in planning, and now it’s great to see construction getting underway.”

The school is in the process of transitioning from a career magnet school to a regional career hub, which is open to students from nine area high schools. The new facility is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2018. Continue reading →

This week, two events will help HISD students of all ages explore careers in high-demand, high-growth industries.

First up is Family Career Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, at East Early College (220 N. Milby St., Houston, 77003).

The event, sponsored by District VIII Trustee Diana Davila, is for parents and students in grades K-12 in the Northeast and East part of the city and will provide the opportunity to learn more about different careers in the Greater Houston area, HISD programs and resources, and how to connect with high education and industry representatives. HISD District VIII Trustee Diana Davila is hosting a Family Career Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at East Early College (220 N. Milby St., Houston, 77003).

‘When I Grow Up’ career expo to be held April 22 

For the fifth year, local companies will help students of all ages explore their options in high-demand, high-growth industries at the “When I Grow Up Expo” on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Over 300 students and teachers from 31 elementary, middle, and high schools gathered on Saturday to participate in Games Robots Play 2017 “Engineering is my Superpower” at Waltrip High School.

Sponsored by the Waltrip CTE department and Advanced Academics STEM Teacher Development team, each of the games focused on a different superhero and challenged students in engineering, programming, and critical-thinking skills.

Houston Hispanic Forum plans Career and Education Day

Learn about college, careers, and financial aid

The Houston Hispanic Forum is hosting its 31st annual Career and Education day on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Students in grades 6-12 and their parents are invited to attend sessions on potential careers, visit with college representatives, and take advantage of hands-on financial aid assistance.

Transportation may be available from your school, so check with your college center for details. If transportation is not provided, parents and students can get to Career and Education Day with a free METRO pass. The forum is free and lunch will be provided.
